NBA fines Bulls coach Skiles $7,500 for criticizing ref
February 4, 2004
NEW YORK (Ticker) - Chicago Bulls coach Scott Skiles was fined $7,500 by the NBA on Wednesday for criticizing referee Jess Kersey.
Kersey was a referee for the Bulls' 106-97 loss in Seattle on Monday and Skiles complained afterwards that he was being ignored throughout the game.
"Jess turned his back on me from the beginning of the game," Skiles said. "I'm not sure why. He was a big baby. It's a shame for a guy of his experience to be that way.''
During Monday's game, Kersey called Tyson Chandler for a second technical foul, which results in an automatic ejection.
On Monday, Los Angeles Lakers center Shaquille O'Neal - a former teammate of Skiles with the Orlando Magic - was suspended one game for a profanity-laced tirade following Sunday's 84-83 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

So it looks like Shaq was suspended for using foul language on the live broadcast, not for criticizing the refs!

I still think it was for both intentional language and criticizing the officials.
Shaq, we're on live!

I wonder if the FCC will fine him?

Speaking of Lebron, did anyone see his comments about his teammate Boozer?
He said something like "He's the best power forward in the conference, and one of the best in the league. All I know is I want him as my power forward until I retire."
Pretty high praise for Boozer. I doubt Lebron would feel the same way if say Tim Duncan or 'Sheed were traded to the Cavs. Also, while Boozer may be decent, he's certainly not the best power forward in the Eastern Conference. Not by a long shot.

After 1...Lakers lead 24-22 (don't say the words Lakers lead too often anymore  )
Lebron has 11 points. Payton has 12 points.
Shaq looking good early, drawing fouls, and passing. He has 6 points, 2 boards, and 2 assists so far.
Boards even at 10....Cavs lead in Off. Boards 5-2, though.
Lakers have 3 turnovers, Cavs 1
I think two of the Laker turnovers have been on Payton.

Lakers lead 46-41 at half...
Payton makes a 3 at the buzzer, but it's a fraction of a second too late. Hope it doesn't come back to haunt the Lakers.
Anyhow, Shaq with 16 pts, 5 boards, 4 assists, 3 blocks so far.
Lebron has 17 pts, 1 board, and 0 assists
Shaq had a monster slam, and then Lebron got an alley oop right after that.
Lakers still getting killed 10-3 in off. boards. Total boards is 21-20 in favor of the Cavs.
Fox took another 3, but missed badly. He's still rusty. He does have 3 boards, and 3 assists, though.
Overall, a good game. Hope the Lakers can hold on. The all important 3rd quarter approaches. Will it be Lakers outscored by a huge margin, or an evenly played quarter?
We shall see.....

I am soooooo glad he missed it. Not only because it prevented the Lakers from losing but I don't think I could stomach a weeks worth of "Lebron is clutch" "Lebron is the go-to guy" articles.
EDIT: While he may be the Cavs "go-to guy", he's not clutch. He missed 3 free throws the other night in crunch time that led to his teams loss.
Of course now I probably jinxed the Lakers, and Lebron will go off in OT, scoring 10 points or something.

20-10-5, that should be shaq's line every night. a few blocks wouldn't hurt my feeling either, but that is coming from a fantasy owner so what do you expect!
also got GP, and his line was nice as well.
Glad they pulled out a victory today.

I have both Shaq and Payton on my fantasy team, and their FT% is KILLING me! Payton is putting up decent numbers, but Shaq hurt me during his injury, especially not going on the IL. The Lakers fan in me couldn't help but pick Shaq and Payton in the first and second round of my draft. Sure, in retrospect it wasn't such a good idea fantasy wise, but what can I say? I bleed purple and gold.

I missed the game, but what a surprise, outscored huge in the 3rd quarter again. Can this team play a good 3rd quarter for once?
Still it was a good win. Why didn't Kobe play? I thought he was due back this game.

Also, reading the recap of the game, it appears that the Lakers only won this game because the Magic went to sleep. Three turnovers in the last 52 seconds? A lucky 3 by Fox and a lucky steal by Fisher?
I agree with what Shaq said, they should have won this game by 20-30 points.

I had them both as Keepers from last year, it was just luck that Payton became a Laker :)
Either way, yeah you are right the %ages are brutal. I rarely can win either FG% or FT% with those fella's in my lineup.
Seems every week I win points, rebounds, steals, assists, blocks, and 3's. But I lose FG%, FT%, and TO's.
Can't complain though, I'm in 2nd place in my 10 team league only 2.5 games out and playing the worst team in the league this week. hopefully I'll be on the top for the All-star break.

Los Angeles Lakers Team Report - February 9
(Sports Network) - Still without Kobe Bryant, the Lakers managed to pull off an impressive comeback win over the Orlando Magic at TD WaterHouse Centre Sunday afternoon.
Gary Payton's layup with 4.1 seconds remaining in the contest lifted the Lakers to a 98-96 victory. The Lakers erased an 18-point deficit en route to the big win.
Shaquille O'Neal collected 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Payton finished with 18 points in the contest. Kareem Rush scored 17 points and Derek Fisher had 15 for the Lakers, who bounced back after a 23-point loss to Philadelphia on Thursday. Devean George added 11 points in the contest.
Bryant was with the team for the loss, but remains on the injured list with a lacerated finger. The All-Star guard is expected to return either Tuesday in Miami or Wednesday in Houston. Los Angeles is 3-2 so far on its seven-game road trip.
Meanwhile, teammate Karl Malone is still sidelined with a knee injury. Malone is expected to be out until mid-March.
The Lakers return to the court against the Heat Tuesday night.

I think Kobe is expected to sit out tonight's game against the Heat. So hopefully Payton keeps his mouth shut, and the Lakers keep up the defensive intensity. Box score says Kobe, Shaq and Payton all played well.
And they still lost by a ton.
What was that awhile back? "Shaq and Payton alone will win games?"
Even with Kobe in, it wasn't very close in the end, was it?
So now will Malone make THAT much of a difference, after major knee injury and him being over 40, and never coming off this extended of absence?
S. Medvedenko 1-13 in 22 minutes
S. O'Neal 5-12 in 41 minutes

The success of the Lakers have always been dependent on the play of their role players. When Slava goes 1/13, there's trouble. I think normally the Lakers would have let Kobe run loose in the second half, but coming back from injury they wanted to limit him more then ususal.
Shaq played decently, but 14 of his points came from free throws. While 14/19 from the line is great from Shaq, it also prevents the Lakers from really gaining momentum.
And as well as the Lakers stars played, they let Yao, Francis, Mobley, and Taylor play great as well.

wow.
just saw half the game on the ESPN replay.
The Lakers were trying hard, yet didn't get it done.
Walton said they were a very focused and determined team in the locker room before the game - they weren't treating it like it was the 'last road game' biz. They wanted this one bad.
And did anyone watch when Shaq got his 6th foul (after Shaq wasn't called for an offensive foul for obliterating a Rocket)?
It was purposeful - he wanted out of the game. He was frustrated, and being embarassed by Yao scoring on him at will. A Houston player had been jawing at him when he shot his FT prior to Shaq's 6th foul, and it looked like it was getting to him.
What was equally impressive was Yao's good sportsmanship in multiple little actions throughout the game: him helping Shaq up off the floor, him giving the ball back to the other team after a made basket.
Shaq was typically brutish and clueless in his comments after the game:
"O'Neal didn't concede too much to Yao.
``He made the shots, but he got the whistle, too,'' O'Neal said. ``He's a big guy and has a soft touch. I don't think he'll ever be able to play me one-on-one, ever, ever, ever. We let this one slip away. They played with a lot of effort. We just made mistakes.''
So not only does he make himself look bad by complaining about the officiating after he'd just been pwned (can't he ever just say he had a bad game, and/or the other guy played good?), but he complained after the officials deliberately kept him in the game, not calling fouls on him.
And why is Shaq obsessed with not being able to be played "one-on-one"? Since when is that the most important thing? Who cares if Yao doesn't guard him one on one the whole game? Yao guarded him plenty of times alone and did pretty well. Does Shaq think he's the only guy that's double teamed from time to time?
And it occurred to me that with Shaq's style of play (run over people, and force the other team to foul him to stop him) it kind of precludes ANYONE from playing him "one-on-one", unless they are granted 12 fouls a game or so. Or until a team can find someone bigger than Shaq (ya right).
However, the best thing that I could ever see in professional sports is if a giant (Ted the Giant) walked in to play against Shaq and just pushed him all over the place, running over Shaq all game and not getting offensive fouls called on Ted, forcing Shaq to foul Ted to stop him. Then Ted could taunt Shaq for not being "man" enough. That would be bliss.
And fumanstan said:The success of the Lakers have always been dependent on the play of their role players.Than why do Kobe and Shaq jaw so damn much about how they won the rings, they're unstoppable, blah blah blah.
Are you saying that the Lakers need their bit players to step up and win the games for them?

They don't.
And every NBA team needs contributions from their role players to win. Robert Horry, Derek Fisher, Rick Fox all came up huge during the Lakers 3-peat. Even Jordan didn't always win the big game himself... guys like Paxson and Kerr also came up big.
I won't even bother replying to the rest of your post, because it looks like just random Laker bashing for no reason.

I saw part of the game, and what I saw sucked. The Lakers just couldn't defend, and were missing shots. Slava missed several easy layups, at least 5 or 6. I agree Kobe wasn't shooting enough, but Kobe haters always say when he shoots more, the Lakers lose. So who knows.
Yao didn't really pwn or dominate Shaq. They both played well. Shaq blocked a couple of Yao's shots, too. Payback for their first meeting? :D
Yao is all class, though. He tried to help Shaq up when he knocked him down, and was having a good time.
I heard on KROQ this morning, they said that Yao and Patrick Ewing were having a discussion, and they wondered what they were saying because neither can speak English

When guys like Slava go 1-6 or 1-7, they need to stop shooting the ball - not keep launching side-backboard bricks and 15 ft. airballs. And No one even passed the ball to Kobe in the first 6 minutes of the game...it honestly looked like they were intentionally not giving him the ball. He'd be open on the wing on a break and Payton would dish to Slava for a 20-footer.

The numbers make it look like Yao dominated Shaq, but when you look at the game as a whole, look at how both teams defended the others, you'll see a much stiffer defense that Shaq had to deal with than Yao. Yao played a great game, but up against a less constricting single defender, I'm sure Shaq could have done the same.

Some times he was double teamed, and rarely triple teamed.
Many times he was single-teamed by Yao or Mo Taylor.
Heck, they fouled him quite often, and the number of people that do that is hardly an issue.
Again, I'll ask : what is the point whether Shaq was double-teamed regularly? Shouldn't a great BB player make his teammates better and find a way to win, by finding an open teammate to score?
Shaq is more concerned about the number of points and blocks he gets than in passing the ball to truly punish a team.
4 assists for the number of times Shaq had the ball and had multiple defenders on him is not very good at all.
4 assists should be trivially easy for him to get.

I don't know why I even bother responding to you (though the post above actually had some good arguments rather than blatant bashing), but Shaq DOES make the team better with the ability to draw double and triple teams - some people only see the one loss last night to Houston and seem to forget the BACK to BACK to BACK championships won with Shaq. But then again, he must be a bad player since he doesn't always pass the ball and they lose a couple of games.
Please forgive Shaq for not passing to a horrible shooting Medvedenko last night or a Bryant with lingering effects from his stitches taken out the day before. -rolleyes-

What is the deal with the Lakers supposedly taking the contract extension offer to Phil Jackson off the table? Don't tell me that they are thinking of replacing him.
ESPN's Page 2 says they think Phil will leave "after the Lakers lose the West, and Kobe bolts as a free agent."
Kobe is not going anywhere, I really believe that. If anything, Kobe would stay if Phil was replaced because he'd then be "free" of the triangle, and allowed to make his own plays and such.
I wonder what happens if the Lakers win the title...do people still think Kobe will leave? Will Phil quit or be fired?
As for the teams recent play, how many games have Fox, Malone, Kobe, Shaq, and Payton played together this season? None.
How many have Fox, Kobe, Shaq, and Payton played together this season? Two. (1-1)
How many games have Fox, Shaq, and Payton played together this season? Seven. (5-2)
My numbers may be off a game or two, but the point is the players haven't exactly had a chance to gel with each other.

I enjoyed Magic as a player but everything he's done ever since his NBA retirement has driven me up a f'n wall. He's a camera and attention whore.
BTW, has anybody heard how his HIV virus is doing? He seems to be doing quite well, which is pretty remarkable since he's had the virus for a decade and a half almost but also shows you how you can still live a long life with the virus if you got the cash. That, of course, is kinda sad since 99% of the AIDS crowd can't afford the pills to live.

They think Phil Jackson won't be back with the Lakers either and might go back to Chicago :http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-lakers13feb13,1,4277057.story?coll=la-headlines-sports
Also, Buss says that Kobe will not be traded this year. If Jackson leaves, Cleamons or Rambis will become head coach. Shaq never signed that extension he wanted. Payton, Malone, Fisher, Kobe, and Horace Grant can all be leaving. Well...Grant for sure probably.
So after this summer, we're going to be the LA Clippers of basketball!

The ideal situation is that Kobe re-signs, Shaq plays for a couple more years with Malone and Payton, and then it truly becomes Kobe's team in a couple years.

That Times article was a joke. I saw Kobe on the news last night and he says he won't make up his mind until after the season. He says he wants to be a Laker for life (insert "he may be a lifer at Sing Sing first" joke here).
Of course if the Lakers don't win the championship this year, I suspect Kobe would definitely want to leave.
Still, the article did make it seem like the Lakers are going down in flames. I'm not worried about it, myself.

i am not that worried either, he is and always will be a laker, he just wants to test free ageny like jason kidd did, i dont buy it that he is leaving, no chance, plus all the youger players are brought in for kobe ( cook, walton) trust me no body is getting kobe plus if he opts. out he can siign a longer and more lucrative deal worth about 30 million more with the lakers...........

Yet another close game won by the Lakers - man, they sure are making the most of their points, using them to barely beat so many teams that all could be losses.

Their starting five barely knows each other's first names at this point, and it clearly showed with their poor offensive execution.
And even still, the almighty Lakers got taken to the limit by a (right now) very mediocre team.

I knew you could advance the ball to midcourt after a time out in the last two minutes, but I thought you could only do that after a made shot or immediately after a rebound, not after a turnover. By the way, I believe they changed the rule so you can advance the ball after a 20 second time out as well.
Anyways, good win for the Lakers. Kobe has been loving the bank shot the past two games.

What in the hell is goin on with Gary Payton? Is he trying to be the new bad boy/Dennis Rodman type. Yeah I know he always had the the rebellious attitude with Seattle but come on it feels like he's getting tossed every week. The last couple of times(he got ejected)his team got blown out. Congrats to the LA on a 2 game streak. Hopefully we can take that and not get blown out by Philly on friday. If Payton gets tossed again against Philly it will be truely pathetic.

WTF happened in the last minute of that game?
01.3 GS - Full timeout (Timeout #7)
:01.3 LAL - K. Bryant offensive rebound
:01.3 LAL - S. O'Neal misses a 5-foot jumper in the lane
:02.8 LAL - S. O'Neal offensive rebound
:03.9 LAL - K. Rush misses the second free throw
:03.9 GS - A. Foyle enters game for C. Robinson
:03.9 GS - E. Dampier enters game for B. Cardinal
:03.9 LAL - K. Rush misses the first free throw
:03.9 GS - Personal foul on J. Richardson
:03.9 LAL - K. Rush defensive rebound
and those were just the last few seconds.
From the Yahoo internet feed, it seemed like the Warriors kept getting fouls called on them. Shaq wouldn't pick up his 6th, and the Lakers kept missing FT's.
Then the Warriors couldn't get a rebound?
So the refs gave Fisher a 3 PTR that ended up to be the winning margin? What a shock.

Yes. The refs planned it so that Fisher's 3 pointer in the 3rd quarter would be the deciding margin at the end of the game to ensure that the Lakers would win and maintain the Lakers record to make them look better then they really are, thus keeping Los Angeles an attraction for the NBA in order to maintain enthusiasm for the sport. They also didn't want to call a 6th foul on Shaq because they knew he would block a potential game winning shot, and didn't want to kill that drama. The biased refs strike again! Those bastards :(
