Question about The Usual Suspects

This is one of my all-time favorites. I've seen it countless times, and it never ceases to entertain.

But last night I noticed something curious...

Spoiler:
Obviously one of the main points of the movie is that they entire story you've been told is full of lies. So it may be that none of what we saw even took place. Who knows? But one thing you do know is that the story we see is the story that Spacey's character conveys to Chazz's character.

So this caught me as kind of strange... When the group was in LA and pulling off the job on the supposed jewel-dealer, things go awry and Spacey ends up shooting the guy in the head. Now, this is the story that Spacey is telling in the police station... So did he essentially just confess to murder? This is confusing to me. What we see may or may not have happened, but it is the story that he's giving Chazz's character. Hmmm...

Gyno, I think the Detective is largely unconcerned with Verbal's story and whatever crimes he committed. He feels that he'd rather have dirt on Dean Keaton and does not care about the rest. Sort of central theme of the movie: the truth is right in front of you but you refuse to see it.

I agree with you on that point.

But still, confessing to a murder in any form is a bit obscene.

If you watch Law and Order a lot (like me), you'll see that a lot of times, detectives and DAs will grant immunity to the witnesses for anything he says in order to get the dirt on a bigger criminal. Of course, if you watch L&O a lot, you also know that it backfires occasionally.

Didn't Verbal confess under the condition of immunity?

Donnocha is right. The DA's office gave him immunity but the Detective said "you don't have immunity from me".

I've always believed that parts of the story he tells ARE true. we have to discern the bullshit from the truth. several times in the vignettes, spacey's character appears almost out of nowhere (when keaton watches his gf, when he shoots the thief in the head), which are clues as to whether those stories are true. but i cant figure out if those things mean they are or arent true. i'm leaning towards Lies.
