This is one of my all-time favorites. I've seen it countless times, and it never ceases to entertain.

Gyno, I think the Detective is largely unconcerned with Verbal's story and whatever crimes he committed. He feels that he'd rather have dirt on Dean Keaton and does not care about the rest. Sort of central theme of the movie: the truth is right in front of you but you refuse to see it.

If you watch Law and Order a lot (like me), you'll see that a lot of times, detectives and DAs will grant immunity to the witnesses for anything he says in order to get the dirt on a bigger criminal. Of course, if you watch L&O a lot, you also know that it backfires occasionally.
