I have no idea what this is about, but rumor has it that Coach Knight got into an altercation with the Chancellor earlier today.

Maybe they were playing chess and Bobby Knight just hung his queen or something...

It sounds like they were arguing about which dressing is better, French or Italian.

The interesting thing is, the AD was right there with Knight, so it's not like the details aren't known. But we may never find them out.

WTF? Suspended for raising his voice to someone in a grocery store? What kind of dumbass goes up to Bobby Knight and says something to the effect of, "Hey, congratulations on not being such an ******* lately"? The fact that Bobby Knight didn't rip the guys head off and shit down his throat shows that he did have some respect for him. ;)

And that "someone" hired him under circumstances where Knight's being an ******* was very relevant to the hiring process. SO I don't think his supposed statement to Knight was that out of line.

Apparently, the story keeps changing. The suspension may be less that 5 days. It apparently began with Knight possibly resigning, then 5-game suspension, then 5 days. There should be a press conference today.

Ummm, at the grocery store he's just "someone". Would you be happy if you ran into your boss's boss on your own personal time, and he said something that felt like he was taking a poke at you?

If some random shopper at the grocery store came up and said the same thing, and he reacted in the same way, would there be any punishment for that? If not, then there shouldn't be any just because the person happened to be his boss' boss.

Sounds like what happens after some time passes and people cool off after overreacting.

If you saw your boss at the store and tore him a new one (whether you tirade was justified in your mind or not is really irrelevant), you would expect no repercussions at work? You must have different bosses than I have.

Edited to add: No, I wouldn't be happy if my boss said something at the store to me that felt like a backhanded compliment, a "poke". But I'm not naive enough to think that I could fly off the handle at him because of it. And I'm especially not naive enough to think that I could so when my sense of "restraint" or lack thereof, if you will, was a big issue in my hiring.

I just thought I would drop by to give the scoop on this, as I understand it. You can tool around ESPN, the Dallas paper, or Lubbock paper sites if you want to compile this yourself.

Gerald Myers (AD) and Bobby Knight were having lunch at an upscale grocery in Lubbock.

The Chancellor, Smith, was also having lunch there at the time.

While Knight was getting a salad (no word on the type of dressing yet), Smith said to Myers that he was impressed with Knight's behavior, particularly after the warning he received from his profanity-laced tirade aired during the Iowa game, and his handling of the crowd at the Texas game (they got a little rowdy).

Myers told Smith that he ought to tell Knight himself. Smith approached Knight to speak with him. At one point, the exchange became heated....there is rumor that Smith mentioned something to the effect that Knight had stiffed a dinner party, somewhere, sometime. Knight became irate, yelling that Smith was a liar.

Smith became frustrated and walked away and out to the parking lot. Knight followed him out, yelling at him. Chancellor Smith stopped and turned to Knight, and said that Knight ought to give him more respect.

Myers stepped between the two and said "Not here." Smith got in his car and drive away.

Myers and Knight were later seen at a busy intersection in town, when both were outside of a car having a heated exchange. Both returned to the car without altercation.

The school has asked Knight to sign a letter of suspension (5 days) and agreement to curb unruly behavior.

Apparantly, Knight has accepted the suspension and has agreed to sign. He is said to be having a press conference later this afternoon.

As long as schools are willing to hire this dumbass, he will keep doing stupid things.

If people win lawsuits against companies when their manager gives an unfavorable reference to a perspective employer, can you imagine the lawsuit if someone gets fired for cussing their boss out at the store? I wouldn't rip my boss a new one, but I'm not wired the same way Bobby Knight is.

I haven't met my boss in person yet. I wonder if my 18 months of guaranteed employment would protect me from pulling a Bobby Knight. ;)

There are no reports of Knight cussing anyone out at the store (not to say it is beneath him, but it just didn't happen yesterday)

According to ESPN News, Pat Knight said that Bobby Knight will coach in tonights game.

The entire suspension thing may not happen, as cooler heads may have prevailed.

.

Exactly. You have to take shit from your superiors and be able to exhibit some restraint (especially in public) if you don't want any repurcussions at work.

That or look for a new job.

Statement from the university:

Texas Tech University Athletic Director Gerald Myers today (Feb. 3) announced that appropriate personnel action has been taken in regards to head men’s basketball Coach Bob Knight. No suspension is involved, but the action does include a reprimand.

“This is a misunderstanding and has now been rectified,” said Myers. “The matter has been resolved in the best interest of the university.”

“I regret that the situation turned out the way it did,” said Knight. “I look forward to finishing this season in a strong fashion and I am glad the situation is behind me so that I can return to the business of coaching.”

“I applaud the efforts of President Jon Whitmore and Athletic Director Gerald Myers in resolving this issue,” said David R. Smith, M.D., chancellor of the Texas Tech University System. “We look forward to the continuation of what is already a successful season.”

A long time ago, an old woman came across a rattlesnake. It was sick, so she took it in and nursed it back to health. One day, the snake bit her. As she lay there dying, she asked the snake, "Why would you do this to me after everything I've done for you?" The snake answered, "Stupid bitch, you knew I was a snake."

So why did Knight seemed to have gotten another free pass this time? The 5-game suspension just suddently evaporated?

Because the board of regents and president of the university determined that he did not instigate the confrontation, and that his reaction to the confrontation warranted disciplinary action, not suspension.
