(I noticed how the previous poll for 'Best musical' just went in the wrong direction and also realized that musicals before and after 1970 can't really be considered on the same page)
Look for another poll for musicals before 1970.
(Do not include animated films!)

Boy, do the pickings get mighty slim after 1970.
I personally think "Chicago" was everything a musical ought to be, but then again I am a traditionalist when it comes to musicals. I also consider "Cabaret" to be excellent and unusually ambitious for a musical. The others that I find to be uniformly excellent are "Jesus Christ Superstar" (why can't anyone write something like this nowadays?) and "All That Jazz" (Bob Fosse again!).
On the flip side of the coin, I find "The Blues Brothers," "Grease," "Evita" and "Moulin Rouge" all but unwatchable. I really just do not get why so many consider "Moulin Rouge" such a good film? I thought it was like a splatter painting. Just random images thrown up there on the screen, culminating in an ugly mess. That scene with Jim Broadbent singing Madonna's "Like a Virgin" was about as unintentionally funny as anything I've ever seen. But then again, as I earlier stated, I am a traditionalist when it comes to musicals. "Moulin Rouge" is anything but traditional.

This was tough.
Rocky Horror Picture Show, Grease, & Moulin Rouge! were ALL good. Chicago was iffy [I can't understand how this leads in the poll at this point...perhaps because it's the most recent? ah well...stroke/folks]
I don't really consider the Blues Brothers a "musical" [my personal interpretation]. But it IS a classic flick.
And another great musical that was mentioned is Little Shop Of Horrors [as neatMCsammer mentioned]

Moulin Rouge. I was about to say that i didn't consider South Park a musical, but come to think of it, South Park as well as a whole boatload of Disney movies are pretty much no different, just animated. Oh well

Without a doubt, 1776.
Though the single best post-1970 musical moment is probably the title track dance number from "Pennies from Heaven." A great, great piece of movie magic.
Also, I would have added Absolute Beginners to the list.

Moulin Rouge edges out Chicago by a little bit. They are both the top of this pile for being in the grand tradition of musicals, but I think MR pulled it off just a little better. I also gotta give a huge nod to Grease . . . it almost deserves it's own category . . .

I voted for Cabaret. To me, that's one of the best musicals ever, not just post-1970. Of course, I'm a sucker for Weimar Germany and cabaret music, so I'm probably biased.
I put in another vote for why wasn't Hedwig And The Angry Inch on this list?
I think the second best film on this list as it is would be All That Jazz.
