How does swapping with Region X work on a ps2?

(If I'm threading too much into illegal matters, please close).

I received my japanese ps2 today and it came with region swap and the key. Now, what I wonder is how do I use this to play north american games. I put in the key, put in the region x thing and it loads to a screen where it prompts me for what region I want. At what point do I put in my game? I tried to put one in , but all I got was a black screen and the dvdrom makes an odd sounding click (not a loud, just a low click).

It should work as it plays japanese games without any problems, but I cant figure out how to get it to play north american games. With Champions of Norrath going gold, I have to get this working!

Region X is not compatible with older model PS2 systems, and it's to watch other region movies. I almost positive that it's not to play games. The disc will work with a modded PS2 though.

To answer the other question, after you select the region, the tray should auto open.
