help me make a 20 track "best of Grunge music" cd

I would want 2 songs per artist if at all possible.I'd also want some obscure grunge artists as well as modern grunge as well.

i've always considered the singles soundtrack to be a good representation of grunge music... as far as artists i'll start it off

nirvana
alice in chains
mudhoney
sound garden
a little band called pearl jam

these are open for debate of being grunge
smashing pumpkins
sonic youth
neil young (godfather of grunge)

Then I guess The Replacements were grunge (or Paul W.)

Umm....Mother Love Bone....but that would be a little band before the other little band....also there would be Screaming Trees....etc....y bother everyone is going to say PJ and Nirvana.

Soundgarden was more metal/hard rock than grunge

Smashing Pumpkins? Oh my lord not in my opinion

And who gets this Neil Young? Ah no!

Soundgarden wasn't grunge?? I think you'd be in the minority opinion there.

I'd definitely put some Melvins on there. They were a big influence on a lot of grunge bands that hit it big. Houdini was a great album in the early 90's. Maybe tracks 'Hooch' and 'Honey Bucket'

Maybe even a track from Sonic Youth?

If you include Soundgarden, then shitcan Black HOle Sun. You can come up with better than that.

Also, consider something from Local H (As Good As Dead or Pack Up The Cats albums)

I wouldn't include Sonic Youth. They had more to do with noise, post-rock, and riot grrl (depending on what albums you are looking at). If you did put an SY song on there, perhaps something from Goo (like "Mote") would be best.

Dinosaur Jr. would probably be pushing it, but you might be able to make a case for "Start Choppin'" and "Little Fury Things."

I think the soundtrack to the movie HYPE! is a good one. The movie is a documentary that follows the rise of grunge and the Seattle "scene." It's a great movie, especially if you were around for the whole grunge explosion. It's got great live footage from the lesser known Seattle bands (Love Battery, Coffin Break, The Gits...)as well as the giants, and excellent interviews from the people who lived it (Pavitt/Poneman from Sub Pop, band members, Jack Endino, Charles Peterson, Eddie Vedder etc). Definitely worth checking out. I'm not sure if it's on DVD yet. I have it on VHS.

This would be a must for any "Grunge" album. I would also suggest "Hate the Police", "Touch Me I'm Sick" and "You Got It" from Mudhoney.

Most those bands listed aren't "grunge". Being from Seattle doesn't classify a band as "grunge". Take Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains out of there. Soundgarden is very questionable. If you're going to include Soundgarden, only their stuff from SST or Sub Pop would be necessary.

You need:

Mudhoney "Touch Me I'm Sick"
L7 "Shove"
Coffin Break
Melvins
Love Battery
Green River
Tad
Dinosaur Jr (SST stuff)
Skinyard
Gumball
The Fluid ("Hooked" or "Black Glove" or "Fool's Rule")

That's all off the top of my head. I could come up with a ton more if I was at home w/ my record collection.

Check out:

"Another Pyrric (sp) Victory" and "Deep Six" on C/Z Records
"The Grunge Years" & Sub Pop 100 & 200 comps on Sub Pop
"This House Is Not A Motel" on Glitterfront (I think)

i dunno how soundgarden wouldnt' be grunge, when they were one of the first bands tabbed with the title.

i also wouldn't include any band not from the northwest as "grunge"

so take all that smashing dumplings, sonic youth, hole and whoever and dump that idea

Tad, green river, mudhoney, nirvana, soundgarden, coffin break, melvins, any guitar driven with alot of fuzz

Wasn't "Grunge" more of a label describing the look of the Seattle explosion scene at the time? I have always thought of "Alternative" as the correct term for that music at the time.
As to Soundgarden and Alice In Chains. They were definetly grouped in with the Alternative crowd at the time, but I have always thought of them as straight up hard rock.

Ack! Sonic Youth... grunge?! Not in this lifetime. But hell, put 'em on there anyway. Oh yeah, and for not including "Smells Like Teen Spirit".

pavement, grunge? ouch.

when i read someone suggesting L7's 'shit list' i started to laugh remembering how silly that song was!

i would definitely slap on some melvins possibly from their ozma album ('oven' is a great song- helmet even did a cover of it!) or something from eggnog...the song 'antitoxidote: pigs don't let it' is another good tune. don't know if that counts as 'grunge' (whatever that means, i've always hated that term) but those guys were so damn heavy, you can't pass 'em up!

I made a mix of songs that were popular on the radio/released in 1994. The idea came from that Behind the Music they did on that year. 90% of the CD is alternative, I might have to post a track list later.

i only suggested that it's a worthy grunge song. not that you wouldn't find it "silly".
