hmmm, 12 monkeys i guess. although the monty python films should nearly be tied becuase of their rewatchabiltiy. and the fisher king always pulls on my heart strings. man each one can make a decent to solid argument, but overall, taking everything that makes up a movie, 12 monkeys. but if only one of those films could exisit, holy grail.

really tough call... I think he's got 3 tied or first place, but I went with Brazil based on the fact that I've seen it more than any of his other films (with the exception of Holy Grail, but I think that movie is pretty bad).

I'd agree completely. "Brazil" is much more technically accomplished, but I know I could watch "MP and the Holy Grail" over and over. Whereas, with "Brazil," definitely not so much. Although "Brazil" is a wildly original, incredibly impressive achievement. "Holy Grail" has more sentimental meaning to me as well.

any rumours on if and when Criterion is going to do DVD Special Editions of "The Fisher King" and/or "Baron Munchausen" since the laserdisc editions of each films were great - what's the holdup here? I would love to hear the 6-track soundmix of "Munchausen" that were made for the 70mm prints of the film.

This is a tough call since TG is one of my all-time favorite directors. It was a tie between The Adventures of Baron Munchausen and Brazil, but I went with Munchausen for the sheer variety and the superb casting. Also the scene with Robin Williams is worth the price of the movie ha ha.

What really surprised me is how many of you voted for 12 Monkeys. That was possibly TG's weakest movie imo! And the Monty Python thing — you're joking! Some of you actually think Python is better than The Adventures of Baron Munchausen or Brazil????? I'd like to know on what basis. Really — explain why this sophomoric attempt at dorm room humor is superior to those two movies. This should be good.

My favorite Gilliam movie outside of Monty Python is Fear and Loathing.

I would say that you're in the minority in loving Munchausen. Gilliam is also one of my favorite directors, but parts of Munchausen are just...not that good, to put it nicely.

Also, I would say that 12 Monkeys is most certainly NOT Gilliam's weakest film (that would go to Jabberwocky). It's a technically accomplished, well-acted, intelligent and thoughtful science fiction film. I can see many good reasons why people would vote for it.

As for Monty Python, well, you're REALLY in the minority if you think that Munchausen is better than Python. While you might consider it "sophomoric," the fact is that Monty Python revolutionized sketch comedy. Every sketch comedy show since has owed a debt to Monty Python. The jokes may seem sophomoric to you, but the film includes several fantastic gags, and classic comedic performances by all the Pythons, INCLUDING Gilliam. Personally, I think Holy Grail is the weakest Python film (not including And Now For Something Completely Different, which were just refilmed versions of TV sketches), but it's still hilarious and infinitely more watchable than Baron Munchausen. Not better than Brazil, but certainly a classic in its own right.


Edited to add: Why is The Meaning of Life on that list? Terry Gilliam did not direct that film. Terry Jones did. Terry Gilliam directed the short, about the business pirates, at the beginning of the film. Gilliam and Jones co-directed The Holy Grail, and found that working that way wasn't so easy, so for Life of Brian and Meaning of Life, Terry Jones did the directing, and Terry Gilliam was the art director, if I recall correctly. Of course, Gilliam had a free hand on all the animation in the films, but he was not the director of The Meaning of Life. That should be taken off the poll.

BRAZIL is Holy Frickin' Writ, bras. My favorite movie ever.

However, I've never seen a Gilliam movie I haven't, at the very least, really really liked. Most are beloved.

I'd rank them as the following:

[NOTE]: Gilliam didn't direct The Meaning of Life, save for the short that opened the film. I also don't count Holy Grail. It's a codirection with Terry Jones, and more of a collaborative Python effort at that. I love the film like oxygen, but don't consider it part of the "real" Gilliam ouvre.
