No, it hasn't been released yet. Not even in Germany.

The only way to see the complete mini series is to get it on VHS or Laserdisc.

please provide details..........

I am only aware of US LD release in dubbed, subtitled, and director's cut flavors.

I am talking about the full-length German miniseries (6 + hours) that the various video releases were based on. The US video releases (LD, DVD, and VHS versions) which I have seen are all 2-3 hours in length)

Thanks for your reply.

The full length mini series was released on German PAL Laserdisc, limited to 500 copies only. The sound is (of course) German only.

Then there was also a Japanese NTSC Box set released, sound is German with Japanese subtitles.

file this under: titles I wish Criterion would consider releasing this here in the states [or some German video company with the extra common sense to add english subtitles (ala Gimbli Studios and their Miyasaki films)] .

Criterion doesn't have access to it. The film is owned by Columbia TriStar, and they're not licensing-friendly.

oh I know, it's just a pipe dream of mine, since Columbia/TriStar had in the past let Criterion release deluxe editions of "Close Encounters", and "Lawrence of Arabia"

Yeah, but that was back in the laserdisc days, when most studios weren't interested in producing "special editions" themselves. DVD is a whole different ballgame.

Great news !

Does anybody know where I can find out more details about the edition? (other than what the provided link tells) ?

My list of wants is shrinking just a little bit!

unless the 5-hour cut of the film was remastered in 5.1, I am under the assumption that this version will mirror it's tv mini-series incarnation and feature only mono (or 2-channel stereo at the most) soundtrack.
