View Full Version : Just saw "American Wedding"....and it's terrible!!

Ok, so the first two American Pie movies were IMO hillarious and had just the right amount of cheese and heart...
We just watched the American Pie DVD because we didn't get a chance to see it in the theatre, and it's AWFUL!!! The chemistry between the characters is completely gone, Stifler is SO not funny and is a total caricature. In the previous movies, he wasn't so over-the-top.
All the scenes seem ackward and too long.
For fans of the other two movies, is it me or is it terrible as we thought it was?

I thought the first two movies were hilarious, and I thought Wedding was hilarious too. Stifler's character was such an ******* this time around. I don't remember him being so over the top. My friend hated the first two but thought the third was hilarious.

I disliked the second one and only enjoyed it for the whole Band Camp angle. All the other stories were worthless to me.

I enjoyed the first and last films in this trilogy and only slightly enjoyed the second.

I thought that the Stifler rudeness seemed really forced in the first 20 minutes of "Wedding," but didn't have too much of a problem with it after that.

Ditto...for the first act or so it seemed like he was trying to hard to be Stifler, but after that it was classic Pie.

IMO, rated 3rd was most consistant (the Unrated version is kind of clunky tho, the stripper scene, as enticing, gets akward) of the 3 movies. Definitely leagues better than #2 and about the same level as the original.

Totally agree, the first 2 were classics. Would of been better if they didn't make this one.

They're all about the same for me, although i think the first one is a classic.

I really enjoyed Wedding. Going in to it, I figured it would be worse than 2 (which I thought was good), but I was pleasantly suprised.

Yes, this movie was terrible and ended a very good franchise. As much as I like Sean William Scott, his 'stifler' from "Wedding" was just too much.

I liked #3, more than no. 2.

Stifler was the film, he held the picture together. Otherwise it would have been saccharine city.
The whole dance-off thing was pretty hilarious and well played.
Some of the comic set pieces are a little much, but that's kinda the point in these films.

I agree with you 100%

It's as if the very words were stolen from my mouth.

I hate how they keep thinking they have to one up the gross out scenes, just make it funny, I'm not going to the movie to see Stiffler chew a turd. When did Stiffler become the main focus of the series, nothing against the actor, but they make him carry the whole movie, and he fails miserably.

Actually I do need to clarify, I thought the first was a genuine classic.

I thought the 2nd was so-so, only really laughed at the lebian scene.

#3 makes #2 look like Citizen Kane.

In the second one, the scene with the lesbians I thought was hillarious and I couldn't stop laughing. The bachelor party scene in "Wedding" was just too long and not very funny and the gay guy running around in buttless leather pants made it weirder.
I did think the dance-off was funny, but the whole 5-8 min before that in the bar were just weird.

It also seemed like the scenes between Jim, Kevin and Finch completely lacked the chemistry of the previous movies...

Loved 1 & 2. Absolutely hated 3. Without Eugene Levy or the strippers this one would have been a total wash. Stifler was just a total a*hole this time around, and like mentioned, 0 chemistry amongst the cast.

Agree with everything you pointed out, also the acting was horrible.
The extra DVD on the gift set is better than American Wedding, and for that made the purchse worth it...

AW is much funnier when you watch it with a crowd because the crowd reaction to Stifler just makes it funnier (at least for me).

^^ doubtful ^^

Holds true in the first 2 but he was just a mean spirited ass in the 3rd. Hardly worth a laugh, especially since he ends every line with that retarded laugh that wasn't in the first two movies. WTH was that? Did they know what he was spurting out wasn't funny and this was their way of letting us know when we are supposed to laugh?

I actually thought Wedding was much better than the second movie. IMHO.

it was horrible. Stifler was a cocky retard..... but the last one.... he was just a retard..... really dumb and not like a clutz....

I liked the first two, but the only reason I was interested in 2 was because of Stifler. He was the best part of 1, and he turned out to be the best part of 2. However, I think he is probably the worst thing in part 3. He's incredibly over the top, almost completely unlike the Stifler from the first 2 movies.

American Wedding just seemed to recycle everything that was funny from the first 2 movies, and the plot was almost non-existent. The one saving grace for the movie was Eugene Levy--he has got to be one of the funniest actors out there today.

I LOVED 2 and liked 1 a lot.

In part 3, they made Stifler completely different, like a psychotic. Wasn't the same.

Haven't seen this one yet but most of the posts here make me think I should just skip it.

Except for Eugene Levy, I hated American Pie but loved American Pie 2 (which a friend had to really convince me to watch cos I was afraid it'd suck as much as the first). Anyhoo, I was hoping this'd at least compare fovourably to AP2. :(

I thought Stifler's dark side in Wedding was actually a very good move. Shows that while the other guys had kinda grown up, Stif couldn't and all he had was his psychotic side.

Something about the first one is just so superior to the other two. The third one I found particularly bad. I mean awful.

I think the entire series in general is wayyyyyy overrated:)

The original,a mediocre film at best. Masquerades as a raunchy sex comedy, but tacks on phony melodrama soap opera seriousness that feels forced & unfocused. A deserpate attempt to win over female viewers & say "we're smarter than we appear!"...yet fails miserably. Good sex isn't everything message at the end,but handled about as believable as an after school special. It all felt so false.

View 'The Last American Virgin' instead to see how to combine raunchy humor & serious drama the right way...& also have a gutsy ending! That is the movie AP wants to be,but is a inferior product at that. Hardly funny as well, since the jokes like the drama feel forced, rather than happening naturally.

Eugine Levy was the only truely funny thing about the original film(& it's sequel). He made me laugh out loud many times. While the other attempts at humor had no affect on me at all.

The sequel on the other hand actually loosens up alittle bit,the humor flows more naturally, the phony serious drama is shoved into the background & barely there. Movie turns out fairly entertaining & amusing. Light innocent fair,to waste time to. Nothing that would really hold up as a repeat viewer though.

The third film, the worst of the bunch, but just slightly below part 2. It has it's moments. The opening & gay bar dance off sequence are the only truely amusing hilights of the film. The rest is just so so,going through the motions. Even Eugine could not save this film for me & did not get any laughs. Now you know something is wrong when the great Eugine Levy can't get even a chuckle!

I will also comment on another aspect people seem to think are 'defects'. Which is the audio & visual quality of the first & third(maybe even second) films.

They complain about it being 'too dark' & the volume 'too low'. I think it is not a dvd mixing problem, but the fault of the filmmakers & whoever mixed the films in the first place. These both sounded lifeless in theaters. Mainly the party sequences which should be pumping with energy, the music(most likely dubbed over the footage at a low low low low non party like volume) is just shrill & not there at all. The third film even made a gay bar seem like not so much fun(opposite in real life!). The music was low,the dance moves did not go with the music being played(I bet,no music was played on set!)...& dubbed far to low into the background. This is supposed to be a club? Has anyone who worked on the film ever been to a party or club? The music is LOUD,not low,LOUD. Say it with me LOUD.

Yet the clueless idiots who mixed the soundtracks kept the volume on mute more like it while mixing the music in. Really terrible job that ruins any attempt at a party atmosphere the director was going for.

View 'Animal House', 'Blues Brothers' 'Last American Virgin' 'Bacholor Party' 'Foxes' & many other films from the 70's/80's to see how to film a real party onscreen & get the atmophere just right!

All that is missing from the AP films attempt at 'party' sequences. Which also makes the movies feel more manufactured & contrived, which they pretty much are.

Oh yeah, the transfers, were 'dark'(though easy to view in my opinion,so I don't get what the complaints are about) in theater & are the same on video. I am sure it was shot that way as a stylish choice. So no 'defects' in the dvd, Just cluelss soundmixers & other crew personal who do not know what they are doing.

Loved part 1, liked part 2, part 3 was terrible!!!

Very, very disappointed. It was like a completely different film with completely different characters who I could care less about. What a way to ruin a franchise.

I did not laugh once during the original film until Allison Hannigon kicked it up a notch towards the end. But it went back to sucking afterwards. I cannot imagine how these movies keep getting made. I also didn't think Meet the Parents was very funny either, so maybe I'm just crazy.

This is by far the worst of the series in my opinion.. I too liked the 2nd one the best..

I didn't find much of it funny at all, and some of it, just plain unwatchable, esp. the dance off etc.

Can somebody explain what that one guy, who dated the blond in the first, is even in the 3rd movie? I think he uttered all of 3 lines the entire movie. I sure hope he gets paid scale or something... He's just a glorified extra..

I liked the 3rd one better than the 2nd, although both sequels pale in comparison to the original.

Stifler was annoying and way too over-the-top in the first 20 minutes, but once the dance contest and the subplot with him and Finch vying for January Jones' character kick in, he's back to being funny again.

The two reasons I found "Wedding" to be the superior sequel was that they ditched all the dead weight from the cast(although an Oz cameo at the end wouldn't have sucked) and they actually had a plot this time out. American Pie 2 was basically one giant reunion special masquerading as a movie. The only remotely interesting plot thread from that sequel was Jim and Michelle which not surprisingly provided the main storyline for the third film.

Kevin did have one of the funnies lines in 3 though. When him, Finch and Jim are at the bar and he raises his glass to make toast and Jim/finch both tell him to shut the hell up at the same time.

I thought the whole Oz/phone sex plot was funny in 2. I think the only real dead weight in that one was Kevin and Tara Reid's character. Finch learning Karma Sutra was classic.

I loved the original, liked the second, and also enjoyed this installment. It was forced in the first act, but there's enough good stuff in the final hour to make it entirely worth while. Overall I liked it quite a bit...it was a perfect "Culmination" to the trilogy :D

The entire movie to me felt forced, especially the first act. I'd have to say IMO that it fails to live up to the "standard" (and yes, I realize we ARE discussing American Pie movies here) that was set by the first two.

Just saw this over the weekend and i can't believe how Horrible it was. Everyone agrees i guess how forced Stiflers character was in this one, it was just too over the top for me. I liked the way that Stiflers character added to the group dynamic in his own wacked out way in the first 2 films but here in the 3rd it was more like "Welcome to the Stifler show!" Stiflers cool but watching nearly 2hrs of him was too much to handle.
Also, what was up with that Bachelor party, that had to be the worst bachelor party ever. It seemed to drag on and felt completely chopped up and pieced together. It felt like i was watching a TV sitcom skit.

Saw it last week for the first time and thought it was really funny. Like some people on here, I did feel that Stifler's character was a little forced at the beginning and felt awkward, but after awhile, it was much easier to take.

Not sure if I want to own it, but I'll probably end up getting it just so I have the complete trilogy.

I just got finished watching this and what a piece of crap it was. Stiffler's character was so outrageously annoying I don't know how anyone could find him funny -- and this is coming from a guy who thought he was the best part of the first two movies. And to think there's going to be a 4th installment? :hscratch:

How anyone could watch a second sequel to a movie that wasn't very good to begin with and not expect crap is beyond me.
