I was just wondering if there was any possible way of getting around buying the dvd playback kit to watch dvds?

I don't think so!
But then again, i haven't really looked around for any sort of hack.
I would guess it would probably involve some sort of hardware hack, though, considering you need the IR to 1)communicate with with the console, 2) unlock the feature in the box.

Yes...it is possible. You will find details over at XBox-Scene.com.
However, keep in mind that between cost of materials and time, it is likely cheaper just to buy the XBox DVD playback kit.
But if you are after more than just dongle free DVD playback, the cost and time is very worthwhile. That little black box holds a lot of untapped punch.
