View Full Version : Let's Hold a Mock NFL Draft--Everybody Has a Team--Who's In?

Maybe this can be done right after the playoffs when every position is solidified. But we can start picking teams now and figuring out how we are going to do this. It's a fun thing to do that's common on the 'net.

If there's more people than teams available--and people are left out--maybe a couple people who really love their team can BOTH get together--via email--and make their selection here on the board. A collective process like in most NFL clubs. The only problem there is that it's lot harder coordinate with two or so people having a short time frame in making the draft selection.

Anyways, as of now, we can try doing one user per team.

**NOTE** Please pick a team where you know not only their needs but who is a good player to be drafted. Therefore if you pick the Chiefs, you are going to have to know of college players who will go LATE in the draft.

I'll start it off. I'll take the Cleveland Browns picking 7th or 8th (tied with Atlanta). Email: Zampour232@hotmail.com

It won't been seen that is the (dis)advantge of the system, personally I like it. Btw...if no one takes the Broncos (though I think I know who will want them) I'll play. Consider me an alternate :)

yeah Ray Brown isn't getting any younger, but i think the Lions had a pretty solid line, Harrington didn't get sacked a whole lot last year. I've been pretty high on Virginia Tech's Kevin Jones and Oregon State's Steven Jackson. I never thought I would miss old number 20 in the backfield like I did watching the Lions play this year :(

I'll be happy to take the Bengals and their unusually late 17th pick.

Does anyone know what picks have already been traded and what the resulting default order for *all* rounds is, or are we just going to go 1-32 every round and ignore any pre-existing pick swaps? For example, Baltimore traded it's first round pick to New England so the Ravens could move up to select Kyle Boller with the 19th pick last year. Who picks in the 21 slot for our mock draft, New England or Baltimore?

gmal2003
01-12-04, 11:20 AM
I wanted the Lions! Oh well, Ill take the Redskins with I believe the 5th pick. Back to the Motor City Kitties, they need help in the secondary badly, esp. the safeties, they really need to get that safety outta Miami (I cant believe his name escapes me.. Sean somethin) but I guess Ill have to become Snyder and Gibbs instead of Mariuchi and Millen.

Ken,

New England would take Baltimore's pick. And not sure how many rounds yet, we'll have to vote on it after the teams are all called for.

LurkerDan
01-12-04, 01:26 PM
How many rounds? Not just round one? Ok, I picked the Giants but I simply don't follow college ball enough, or have enough time, to do more than a 1st round. So if someone wants my spot, have at it!

HistoryProf
01-12-04, 02:05 PM
i'd say cap it at 3, 4 tops in terms of picks....there are scant few people around here capable of making any kind of informed picks beyond that, and we don't have two days to do it....at least I don't. I'd be perfectly happy just doing the first two rounds actually. Shall we vote on it? (another thread maybe?)

01-15-04, 04:10 PM
There are 16 teams with owners, and 16 teams without owners. If nobody else wants to play, I suggest we double-dip, and assign the remaining teams to owners who already have a team.

To keep folks from getting picks too close or too far apart, I would start with the bottom half of the 16 owners (starting with the 9th one on the list), and assign the remaining teams to them from the top down. That would result in the following:

Canadian Bacon: 3 Arizona and 21 Baltimore
gmal2003: 5 Washington and 22 Dallas
brizz: 6 Detroit and 23 Seattle
Jam Master Jay: 7 Atlanta# and 25 Green Bay
PacMan2006: 8 Cleveland# and 27 St Louis
davidlynchfan: 12 NY Jets and 28 Tennessee
MrX: 14 Chicago and 30 Indianapolis*
Bill Geiger: 15 Tampa Bay and 31 Kansas City
IdgIe49: 16 San Francisco and 1 San Diego
kenbuzz: 17 Cincinnati and 2 Oakland
nchhabra & Cusm: 19 Minnesota and 4 NY Giants
WildcatLH: 20 Miami and 9 Jacksonville
Quake 1026: 24 Denver** and 10 Houston
NC Mojo: 26 Carolina* and 11 Pittsburgh
RyoHazuki: 29 Philadelphia* and 13 Buffalo
chrisih8u: 32 New England* and 18 New Orleans

Of course, if as a Redskins fan, gmal2003 wants to trade Dallas for either Baltimore or Seattle, I'm sure we could arrange something.

Is this a great idea or does it just plain suck?

chrisih8u
01-15-04, 04:13 PM

I'm not officially part of the draft yet, but if a mock is supposed to be an estimation of what will happen in April, why not trade? There are some very likely trades, especially among draft position. I say yes. Remember, the chart teams use for pick values is online and we can go by that.

To get people started, here's Mel Kiper's first mock draft.
28. Kansas City -- Keith Smith, CB, McNeese State

I think Mel's got KC in the wrong place. The default (pre-playoff) list is at http://www.nfl.com/news/story/6962973.

The effect of playoffs on the default list is explained here:
Within a tied segment, non-playoff clubs are given priority over playoff clubs. Priority of playoff clubs within a tied segment will be based on their advancement in the playoffs, but they will not drop out of their tied segment unless they participate in the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl champion will select 32nd and the runner-up 31st.

The default (pre-playoff) rankings from 21-32 were:
21. Baltimore 10-6 (1)
22. Dallas 10-6 (1)
23. Seattle 10-6 (1)
24. Green Bay 10-6 (2)
25. Denver 10-6 (1)
26. Carolina 11-5
27. St Louis 12-4 (2)
28. Tennessee 12-4 (2)
29. Philadelphia 12-4 (3)
30. Indianapolis 12-4 (3)
31. Kansas City 13-3 (2)
32. New England 14-2

(1) = Lost in Wild Card Round
(2) = Lost in Divisional Round
(3) = Lost in Conference Finals

The Chiefs were the only 13-3 team, so there are no other teams in their segment they can be tied with. Since the Super Bowl finalists are known (Carolina 11-5 and New England 14-2), they're slotted for 31/32 regardless, and the Chiefs have a better record than all other teams, so they should be 30th.

In fact, the only team who was directly impacted by the playoffs was Green Bay. All of the other 10-6 playoff teams lost except them, so the Packers move down to 25th, moving Denver up one spot to 24th. Am I right?

Well, it's not MY draft thread, but I think I read upstream that Pro Bowl Sunday was the kickoff, and 2 or 3 rounds was the length.

6. Detroit -- Sean Taylor, S, Miami (FL)

(lots of Hurricanes and Buckeyes in that first round)

I like that pick! Taylor is just a badass and will be a impact player (ala Roy Williams in his first season with the Cowboys) right off the bat. I'm hoping the Lions will pick him.

Until someone convinces me otherwise, I can't imagine a better pick for the Lions at this point....6 is too high for either Jackson or Jones at RB....any chance Greg Jones will still be around at pick #38?

Brizz, you say #6 overall is too high for a franchise back? In a year without a Manning or Big Ben, you are talking those guys #1 overall.

yeah I agree, I'm thinking Greg Jones will still be there in the 2nd round, also Michigan's Chris Perry (who'd I'd like to see the Lions take with that second round pick, he would fit into that WC offense perfectly) and Northern Illinois' Michael Turner would be good picks there too.

You "inherited" Houston.... we stalled at 16 volunteers, so everybody also "inherited" one of the orphaned teams. Look at the bottom half of page two earlier in the thread.

If you don't want Houston, I'm sure someone else can pick for them. Just let us know.

OK guys. Now that we know the entire draft positioning with the Superbowl over, we should discuss when to do this draft. What would you guys like to do?

Do you want to wait till after the combine to see who impresses and disappoints? Do you want to wait weeks after free agency to see what holes on your team are plugged up? Do you want to do it a week before the real NFL Draft?

Also, if anyone who didn't get a team still wants one, there are a few people here--including me--who have two teams because of a lack of people doing this. So a few teams are still available.

wildcatlh
02-05-04, 09:11 AM
I'd probably say after the combine. I'd like to do it closer, but to get through four rounds is going to take a while. Maybe... hm... go with a 4 weeks before the draft start (that'd be around March 28). That'd give some time for free agency and still leave enough time to finish this up...

I second the idea of waiting until closer to draft day. And are we going to do this mock draft at a set day and time? I'd rather this not drag on for two weeks... I'd love to somewhat closely approximate what the real draft day will be like. (Maybe 30 minutes for a pick instead of 15, but keep it in line...)

USC's Williams will enter NFL draft

NFL.com wire reports

LOS ANGELES (Feb. 25, 2004) -- Mike Williams is passing up a possible shot at the Heisman Trophy for the NFL.

The USC receiver became the first sophomore to opt for the NFL draft since the Maurice Clarett court ruling when he announced his decision.

Williams, a 6-foot-5, 230-pounder, leaves with two years of eligibility remaining for the Trojans.

"It was a very, very, very difficult decision," Williams said on a conference call from his home in Tampa, Fla. "This is my opportunity. A lot of great opportunities don't come along in life to do great things.

"A lifelong goal of mine is to play in the NFL. I've always had the dream of playing the game at the highest level. My love for the university alone was enough to stay."

Instead, Williams is expected to be selected high in the first round of the 2004 NFL draft rather than competing for the Heisman Trophy as a top player for the Trojans.

"He'll be a high pick. There's no question about it," said Gil Brandt, the NFL's chief scouting consultant.

Williams, an All-American who turned 20 last month, said after USC beat Michigan in the Rose Bowl he planned to stay in school.

Then came the Clarett ruling.

Clarett was suspended last season after starring at Ohio State as a freshman. He went to court to challenge an NFL rule preventing players less than three years out of high school from entering the draft, and a federal judge ruled in his favor.

Williams is one of several standout wideouts available in the upcoming draft, along with Pittsburgh's Larry Fitzgerald and Texas' Roy Williams.

He figured to be alone at the top next year, and said that played into his decision in an unorthodox way.

"This is a receiver-loaded draft," Williams said. "That's where the competition's at. I want to be where the competition is."

Williams said the cons probably outweighed the pros regarding the decision, but ultimately they weren't decisive.

"Most of the cons were financial ones, let's put it that way," he said. "Money wasn't the motive or the drive. If that was the case, I'd stay in school four years to maximize my potential.

"The possibility of winning the Heisman Trophy, the possibility of winning an undisputed national championship -- I was really close to staying for all those reasons. At the same time, I have reasons of my own. The opportunity came about."

Williams finished sixth in the Heisman Trophy balloting last season when he caught 95 passes for 1,314 yards and a school-record 16 touchdowns as the Trojans (12-1) won The Associated Press national championship.

Williams caught 81 passes for 1,265 yards and 13 TDs from Heisman Trophy winner Carson Palmer as a freshman in 2002.

"Mike has made his decision that he wants to go to the NFL," USC coach Pete Carroll said in a statement. "We're disappointed to see him go. ... Mike had a terrific two years for us and we're anxious to watch him in the NFL."

Williams said he had not thought about coming out until getting a phone call from a lifelong friend early last week asking why it was not under consideration.

"That just got the ball rolling," Williams said.

"I'm going to take my opportunity to go through a door that was opened by someone else."

AP NEWS

Oh man, a 6"5 230 pass catching machine. Mike Williams along with Larry Fitzgerald, Roy Williams, Reggie Williams, Rashaun Woods and that wideout from LSU who's name escapes me, but this year is looking like the year to pick up that big wideout.

kenbuzz
02-26-04, 02:59 PM
Perhaps, but will Oakland will still take Larry Fitzgerald. I know, I'm them. :)

Even though Williams would likely be the #1 pick next year, I wouldn't be surprised if he were entering this year's WR-heavy draft so he could go to an early mid-round team -- someone more competitive than an Oakland, Diego or 'Zona. Perhaps Atlanta or Houston?

HistoryProf
02-26-04, 04:40 PM

another dillema: Do we do this in real time with everyone present (impossible!) or do we lollygag and span it over a few days.

I prefer the former since it would really simulate an actual experience of a draft.

PacMan2006
02-27-04, 04:34 PM
OK, how would you guys like the idea of starting this on April 1st? And how many rounds would you like to do?

As far as literally how to do it...a chat room would be good but hard. We may just have to create a NFL Draft thread and have people drop in a place their pick.

6 is way too high for Jackson. 3 is probably too high for Mike Williams (plus if SD is going to drop down... it's going to be for Manning, not Williams. If they were going to trade down and draft Williams they'd go down to the 6-9 area). Cleveland isn't taking a QB. Taylor and Winslow are NOT dropping to 10-11. 15 is too high for Jones. 20 is too high for Rogers (who's probably a second round pick), not to mention Miami's all but said they're going WR. And that' s just from a quick glance.

Bumping this, partially to see if there's anything official on when we start.

I think we should do this soon. The 1st round should not be a problem, at least. I am officially proposing that we start this on April 1st. That's 1 week from Thursday. If we could at least do the 1st round, we can work out the rest after.

I'm good for April 1, but I will not be available until after 11:30 pm EST. Maybe April 4 would be a better night?

How bout something like this?

1-8 draft Friday April 3rd
9-16 draft April 4th
17-24 draft April 5th
25-32 draft April 6th

Then we wont have to have everyone here and teams will only have to check in on the one day they draft.

I can be here anytime. So maybe everyone can list when they would be available.

OK, let's do this. Everyone do one last roll call and say your team(s). If everyone isn't here, we'll have to start emailing.

I cant read calendars. :(

I was thinking that it would be easier to spread it out over days because it would be nearly impossible to have everyone hear all day. Does anyone have any ideas? Maybe we can start soon and just email people when its their turn.

PacMan2006
03-24-04, 06:00 PM
^^Yeah, what I was thinking was if we can confirm that everyone is here, then we can pick a day and just go. As long as we know people are still around their computers, we'll know they can come in and draft a player.

But if we find out that a person isn't here, we'll also want to give their team away.

How about this for a schedule. Just do it in a thread, yadda yadda yadda.

Monday, April 5: Round 1, picks 1-8
Tuesday, April 6: Round 1, picks 9-16
Wednesday, April 7: Round 1, picks 17-24
Thursday, April 8: Round 1, picks 25-32

Monday, April 12: Round 2, picks 1-8 (33-40 overall)
Tuesday, April 13: Round 2, picks 9-16 (41-48 overall)
Wednesday, April 14: Round 2, picks 17-24 (49-56 overall)
Thursday, April 15: Round 2, picks 25-31 (57-63 overall)

Monday, April 19: Round 3, picks 1-8 (64-71 overall)
Tuesday, April 20: Round 3, picks 9-16 (72-79 overall)
Wednesday, April 21: Round 3, picks 17-24 (80-87 overall)
Thursday, April 22: Round 3, picks 25-32 (88-95 overall)

Or something to that effect. That gets it done right in time for the real draft, the 24th and 25th.

Monday sounds good to me, there will be a new thread? and since alot of us are in different time zones...how is that going to work? Becuase I'm sure people post at different times during the day.

Anyways, this should fun and will be interesting to see how it compares to the actual draft. But I'll have to say, if there's any of those receivers that can't be passed up still there at #8 will give Vick some great weapons.

chrisih8u
04-03-04, 06:28 PM
I think there will be a new thread. As for picking, it shouldnt be too hard. If its your turn, you select a player. You just have to keep checking in to see if its your turn.
