Does anyone have any recommendations for a really scary ghost story? I'm looking for haunted house type books which involve ghosts. I don't really find Stephen King's work all that scary. I don't really scare all that easily. So, let me hear your chioces for a good scary read. anybody...

My favorite ghost story is "The House on Cemetery Street" by Cherry Wilder. I found it very scary, because more than being about ghosts, it was about the incredible evil that can be committed by normal people in moments of cowardice.

My favorite is Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House. Great story that's been made into 2 movies and inspired about 5 others. It's the last thing I've read that has really creeped me out. Normally, books don't get to me at all.

Best Ghost Stories of Algernon Blackwood by Algernon Blackwood, Everett F. Bleiler(Editor)

Was voted the best horror novel of all-time by the Horror Writers Association. Has anyone here read this? If so, how is it?

Is it a horror novel as the prize suggests, or a collection of short stories as the title indicates?

FWIW, I own an unread copy of a collection republished by the Book of the Month Club and entitled "Tales of the Uncanny & Supernatural".

The dust jacket states "First published in 1949, these 22 tales were chosen from Blackwood's nine story collections". The contents comprise:-

The Doll
Running Wolf
The Little Beggar
The Occupant of the Room
The Man Whom the Trees Loved
The Valley of the Beasts
The South Wind
The Man Who Was Milligan
The Trod
The Terror of the Twins
The Deferred Appointment
Accessory Before the Fact
The Glamour of the Snow
The House of the Past
The Decoy
The Tradition
The Touch of Pan
Entrance & Exit
The Pikestaffe Case
The Empty Sleeve
Violence
The Lost Valley

FWIW, the two highlighted stories in that list are also in the volume you have cited.

Did you know that Blackwood was a member of the English aristocracy?

For some reason I'm in the mood to read a really good novel with a ripping good Ghost story. Does anyone have some reccomendations?

Ghost Story by Peter Straub is excellent. I only know my own threshold for fear so I can't guarantee anyone will be scared but It is scary, downright scary. I also recommend anything by Richard Laymon, check this thread: http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=252735&highlight=laymon

If you'd like to try some historical short ghost stories, the best imo are by M.R.James.

They're set in Victorian/Edwardian England and are very spooky, some of the best examples are "the Signalman",and "oh whitsle and I'll come to you".
Ghost Stories of an Antiquary by M.R.James is a good & cheap place to start, although any compendium of M.R.James ghost stories is pretty top notch.

My favorite ghost story is "The House on Cemetery Street" by Cherry Wilder. It was published in Asimov's (Dec. 1988, or at least that's when the copyright says) and it's also in the 1990 edition of Best New Horror.

I always liked "Hell House" by Richard Matheson. It was made into the 1973 film "Legend Of Hell House".

Although it's not a book, I'd recommend Kwaidan: Criterion Collection on DVD. It's a series of short Japanese ghost/horror stories that are really well done.
