My biggest concern is the new subtitle translation. I've heard some disturbing things already about, but not enough to be comprehensive as to what its quality is.

Actually, in light of the shipping delay on my screener (which should arrive over the weekend), I went ahead and borrowed a friend's copy, so I might be able to post my review in the next few days. It's interesting that you brought up a concern with the subtitles, though...I hadn't really thought of that as a specific review point. I'm not fluent in Japanese at all, so I'm predicting that any potential "problems" with the translation might elude me. Could you be more specific with your concern? I'd like to be as fair as possible in the review, and maybe you can help in that department.

Randy,
I'm talking about the "new improved" subtitle translation. This time, for some reason, Criterion did not offer the option of choosing the old subtitles or the new one, like they did with Throne of Blood. I have several concerns with "new" subtitles in general, for a few reasons. I don't want to go into them just yet, because trust me, thinking about subtitles going into a movie makes it almost impossible to just sit back and enjoy the film, as you are spending the whole time judging every line of dialogue. It, in effect, "poisons" the film experience.
I realize you want to bring up the subs in your review, which would be a very good thing, as nobody else really has.
So, if you'd like, you could email me after you watch the film and before you write your review and I'll tell you what my specific concerns were/are. Then you can better tell if you'd like to include that angle in your review or not - which would be very cool, as I've searched high and low and haven't found the comments I'm looking for in any review out there. I know there are many others like me, as well.
