Does anyone else think Blockbuster is getting creamed on their DVD trade-ins?
Maybe just my perception, but I've been hitting absolutely every Blockbuster I can find, and I've made multiple visits to the better part of 20 invidiual stores and there is nothing but junk in the $9.99 trade in bin(the one where you trade a DVD to get a $12.99 new one). Nothing but the Wal-Mart 5.88 fare and some much much worse. Wait until someone has a release out that costs 24.99 new, they will really be inundated with crap. I know that there is the occasional find, but it seems like for the most part they will take a bath on these discs. Why buy for 9.99 used what you can get for 5 or 6 bucks new?

They most definitely are. The same thing happened to Electronics Boutique when they had their trade in deals.
It was a good deal for those who got in on it but it meant that EBX was getting tons o' crap as well.
Some of dat crap is still there.
I expect the same for the forseeable future with Blockbuster. But with the millions of DVD players given as Christmas gifts, some Blockbuster stores will become the equivalent of Wal*Mart's $5.88 bins (Shelton, CT.'s bin now says $5.50)

The only time I used this program was when I traded in a 2 disc Tombstone that the studio had crunched upon me sending it to them to have a mis-pressed disk replaced. The guy behind the counter almost wet himself to buy it once it was scanned. (I didnt have a use for it since the box had been smashed, so I traded it in and got POTC for $13.)
They will take anything that their scanners can read, the AP2:Behind the Crust edition where the UPC was slashed wont scan.

So they do this at all of the stores? I think I'd like to try this but I haven't set foot in a Blockbuster in years. In the past I usually ended up regretting it. However, I have an old edition of a flick I'd like to get rid of. If only I could think of a pricey film I want that Blockbuster is likely to have. Might have to go browse around. Anyone ever score Criterions with this deal?

I picked up an almost brand new (sleeve and everything) of TCM SE at a BBV I visted. Even the yellow Best Buy sticker was still on the case.
It was 9.99 so I figured why not . I could bet the original owners saw the movie no more than once.

if the csr scanned it he/she was wrong, as that will put it into the store inventory as the actual title of the dvd.
it is in the inventory as "big dvd trade in" being the name of the dvd.
then it gets a bar code sticker that says "big dvd trade in" as the title.
any dvd could have been sold for 12.99 if you scanned that bar code after the dvd was scanned.
csr is only supposed to scan a bar code at the reg that "counts"
that he accepted a dvd as a trade in.
then he scans the dvd you will buy.
the reg price shows on the register.
then another bar code is scanned to lower the price to 12.99.
so...
1. customer hands a dvd to the csr.
2. csr scans a bar code that says" accept dvd trade in.
3. scan dvd that cust is buying.
4. scan bar code to lower price to 12.99.
5. take money.
this program ended on dec 22nd.

Program starting back up on Friday Jan.2nd,2004. Spoke with a csr at my local BBV.She indicated the program was a success. She also indicated that other stores are going to try this with video games.YMMV.

They will start doing this again at various times thru the year as a promotional tool.
The reason the deal sucks is not because you only find the cheap quality DVDs traded in, but from a consumer stand point, you could go to Best Buy and buy it brand new for 15.99 anyway. They mark down to 12.99 from their inflated prices to make it sound like you're getting a good deal, when in reality you're only getting three or four dollars for that DVD you traded in over what you could have gotten for at a better store.

My roomate works at BBV, and I bought mint copies of The Terminator SE (with shiny cover) and (drumroll please) the Project GreenLight 4-disc set including movie Stolen Summer for $7 bucks each with his December discount. What idiot traded these in I don't know, but I say keep the program running! I also saw The Evil Dead (anchor bay non-BOTD re-release), and unopened Office Space, and several other decent DVDs.
Of course, 95% of that junk is utter crap. I think they had 4 copies of Dinner With Friends!
