How long do most DVD-R's last?

Do DVD-R discs tend to last as long as other DVDs? I was just wondering, because I started using my DVD recorder, and I bought some Fuji DVD-R discs. The material I am recording is something I want to have for a long time.

If they are kept in good condition (that is, not scratched up, etc.) they should basically last your lifetime. No worries.

When kept in optimal conditions, some DVD-Rs may even last until the next season of the Simpsons is released on DVD.

I've read (I don't remember where) that the really cheap media will break down after 5 - 10 years (again I do not remember the technilogical specifics on this), and that good brand name media (Sony, Memorex) supposedly employ very high quality control standards such the media should last over 100 years.

You must be referring to those Vinyl-R discs.
