WWE having problems with ECW footage

The WWE has been contacting several former ECW superstars recently about getting their permission to use their likeness on future WWE releases where ECW footage is being used. The WWE purchased all of the assets from Extreme Championship Wrestling in a bankruptcy proceeding earlier in the year, which included the large ECW video library. However, the WWE is not well received on all fronts from former ECW superstars. Guys like Joey Styles and "The Franchise" Shane Douglas have been very outspoken about how they feel that the WWE doesn't have any right using any of the ECW footage they appear in, due to their specific issues with ECW management prior to the closing of the company. The first major use of ECW footage in a WWE released product will be when the WWE releases the upcoming two disk Mick Foley DVD (coming out on January 20th, 2004), which will feature several of Mick's ECW matches with guys like Sabu, Mikey Whipwreck, Terry Funk, and others.

I always wondered how this works. Do the wrestlers on the DVDs get a percentage of sales, a flat rate or nothing at all? When the Pioneer Best of ECW DVDs came out many of the guys were already in the WWF and I wouldn't think they could sign a contract with a rival wrestling video company.

Good to hear Joey Styles agreed to terms. I know he had sued the WWE in the past due to a quick clip of him on a Steve Austin video. I'd hate to have heard voiceovers on the matches with The Coach.

I wouldn't think the wrestlers would have any choice. I mean anything they did in ECW I'd figure would be property of ECW. It's like contacting other athletes for footage. Like calling up Patrick Ewing to get his permission to have use some footage of Jordan dunking on him for a DVD. Would never happen.

So Pioneer could make a Best of Cactus Jack/Dudley Boyz in ECW and not have to pay them anything? They were all with the WWF at the time. I remember the pictures on the Dudley Boyz DVD had to be changed because Pioneer had used pictures of them in the WWF facing Matt & Jeff Hardy.

They went through all this back when they used Joey Stiles' footage, without permission, in the Austin 3:16 UNCENSORED video. He threatened legal action, Vince & Co. cut a check and everyone walked away happy. Which is probably what's going to happen this time around too.

Why don't they just blur out these wrestler's faces in the matches?

That's pretty funny! ha ha! (insert rolling on the ground smiley face here)

I'm just glad I have a region free player for all the UK released ECW PPVs & TV show disks!

Where do you buy your ECW PPV and TV dvds at??

I was always sad to see ECW leave. I really got into ECW, ever since Vince took a monopoly in the wrestling business (except for JJ's new wrestling show on PPV) wrestling has been pretty dull, I've probably only watched one full Raw show in the past year, and Smackdown isn't even worth the time. In the past year with Smackdown I think I only caught 10 full minutes.

Suncoast only has the ones released in the US. Go to amazon.co.uk and search "ECW" in the DVD section for a list of all the PPVs & TV shows (5 of them) available.

I don't think they'll be available for too much longer due to the WWE buying up the rights.

DeepDiscountDVD also has ECW DVDs. I picked up the ones missing from my collection during the 20% off sale.

While they're at it, why don't they just blur out the WWF attitude logo?

Again, DeepDiscountDVD only has the US ECW DVDs.

There's about 30 ECW PPVs released in the UK. And 5 volumes of two hour "best of" TV shows on DVD. Very well put together too.
