Mix CD Chain Letter
I was thinking of starting a chain letter for trading mix cds, but don't really know how to go about it. Seems like it would be an interesting way of hearing new music in different styles.
Anyone think it is a good idea? Anyone have instructions on how a chain letter gets started?

I don't think chain letters, even well-intentioned ones, are a good idea. Don't mean to thread crap, but you might want to reconsider.

I'm doing a similar project w/ art & writing coming next spring/summer of 2k4. I contacted some online friends who share a similar vision and asked them if they wanted to participate; most said yes, a coupld said they didn't think they'd have time. I didn't set any kind of maxs or mins on what you could do/share (ie - number of people to pass, type of piece, etc).
So.
I suggest contacting some people or starting a website to promote it; I don't know if you have the time or technical know-how to start a website, but if you could form a mailing list comprised of people who request to be part of the project, you are cutting out any of the unknown factors (the big one being, 'who will actually send it?'). Mixing tapes, like art & writing, is something people like to spend some time working on; advance notice will probably make the project run much smoother and maybe even get it some word of mouth cred.
In the meantime, check out Art of the Mix. They have a mixtape/CD exchange that may keep you busy during the wait between now and yr project.
Oh yes, another thing you might keep in mind is that music has polarizing tendecies. If you want to see how passionate -love or hate- people can get about an artist, just stick around here a little longer. Are you sure that everyone will really want to hear the music you're using? Just a thought and something that'll be important if you want to keep this alive. Perhaps running with a theme-per-mailing-event would be the best?

Just for fun, you might want to check out Tiny Mix Tapes. People post ones they made there, sometimes with a little write up about them. I find it really interesting to browse the site - even found out about a couple of bands that way.
