I konw that this is in LA and New York, (obviousily), but when is Sony going to release this wide - before the end of the year? I have the feeling this film is not going to get included on my '2003 Film' list. :(

Sony originally had plans just to keep it as a "really limited" release, but with the positive word of mouth it's getting, it should spread to theaters across the country soon, but before the end of the year? I don't coun't on it, unless you live in the top twenty (maybe thirty) markets.

I saw it - very original and funny - to a point. The visuals and the reference to Jacques Tati, Fred Astaire, Josephine Baker, etc. were great. But the plot is rather contrived. I give it an 8/10, definitely worth seeing.

As soon as it goes wide, I'll be seeing this one.

I doubt this will truly go wide - probably will be just top 30 markets or whatever.
Opens here in the S.F. area Dec. 26

Saw it today and was much impressed. It was well into the film before I realized there weren't subtitles - and they weren't necessary! So, well-crafted and directed.
The story isn't anything deep - its all about the gags and they are very clever. And the visuals of course are totally unlike any other animated film (for obvious reasons.)
Make sure you stay till the end of the credits.
8/10

Great GREAT film! And one of the year's best. I saw it in London this past (late) summer. I'll definitely be seeing it again when it opens here.

I'm planning on seeing it this weekend. I saw the preview before a screening of The Station Agent while I was on a business trip to Southern California a few weeks ago, and the music had me tapping my foot along with it. I hope the film's score uses much of the same music and that it's available on CD.

I saw this today, and really enjoyed it a blast and a half, and as someone who loves the tour de france this was an excellent movie.
Nice pic of Coppi :D

Wow, what a great film! Triplets has catapulted into my top 10 list for 2003. It's a feast for the eyes and ears, and damn, does this movie have personality! So bizarre and wonderful.

Received the French SE(R2) of Les Triplettes De Belleville from FNAC and it came with that.
Have absolutely no idea at all with regard to whether any downloads exist i'm afraid.

I would assume there is no English subtitled option on the French SE, right?

I'm not sure....i suppose as 'Rendezvous' can be used quite readily in the english language and to a non-french speaking audience would merely be interpreted as a meeting in Belleville.. it would gain a greater market audience than if it was distributed in the UK under it's French title etc.....don't know for certain by any means...just my take on the matter.

Question: Is the Disney/Dali short Destino a Landmark Theatre exclusive? The New York City presentation I saw last December didn't have it? The film is finally opening here in DC tomorrow (finally!), and I have a choice of four theatres to see it at (one Landmark, two Loews/Cineplex' and the Cinema Arts), and I would favour the Landmark if the short is the bonus.

According to the Landmark website it's exclusive in "most of our markets". I bet that includes DC.

Saw this last night. No english subs in the movie either. You don't really need them as there is very little actual dialogue and the movie does an excellent job of telling the story without. Highly recommended. There are some extremely funny moments and I loved the music.

It opened a bit wider in the Chicagoland area this week. I have a tough week at school, so I'm hoping it stays in theaters until next Friday so I can get a chance to see this.

IIRC, at the very end, the paddle-boat guy is shown still waiting for the old woman to return.

Saw it on Valentine's with my wife and we both fell in love with this film. I wish there were more movies that had the amount of joy shining though that Bellville had.

Spoiler Alert!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am bumping an old thread, but I just saw this movie tonight.
Honestly, I am stunned reading some of comments on this movie.
I am incredibly open-minded about movies. My friends crack jokes that I am a movie snob and that I like boring films. I saw the accolades for this movie and was prepared for an incredible movie experience.
I could not have been more disappointed, and I really do not understand what all of the praise is about. Read the following knowing that I was looking forward to this movie so, so much, and that I wanted it to be good. No....not good, I wanted it to be great.
I read this thread and Ebert's review, and I would swear that we watched a completely different movie.
It was strange, but not so strange that I felt that I was seeing something inventive. I kept waiting, and waiting, and waiting for the movie to.....well.....move!
I kept waiting for the humor, I kept waiting for a song, I kept waiting for that little moment that makes you say "Ahhhhh......now this is what we were waiting for."
My complaints, and please, please tell me why I am wrong on this one:
1. The best musical number was in the opening with the 40's style animation. That song was good....very good....but was not to be repeated again, in that quality, in the film.
2. There was not one laugh. I sat in a theater with 40 people and did not hear one laugh.
3. The extended and extended and extended periods of silence. I understand that silence sets a mood or tone, but there were so many opportunities to pull out of the murk: the dog dream sequences would have been a perfect chance to break the monotony and to show something different. The dream sequences were just as boring as the "live" sequences. And yes, I did understand that they were establishing character and motive, but I didn't feel that the movie pushed far enough. Every time I thought a great point was being made, I felt like punching the chair in front of me, in frustration at the story not being told.
4. I hate musicals, but I was absolutely dying to hear a song after, what I felt was nothing more than a good short animated film being dragged out well beyond its means.
5. There is a beautiful song used early in the movie. If you want to hear it (and see it) played properly, watch "32 Short Films About Glen Gould." I highly recommend it.
6. The citscapes, animation of the cars, and ocean scenes are great......great. But they are not worth the rest of this movie. The way that the animators get the "weight" of the cars to look right is, well, fantastic.
7. The ultimate question: Did I care about the characters? No.
I went with three friends.....one fell asleep, and the other two pelted me with popcorn for my bad recommendation. We talked about the movie for thirty minutes afterwards, searching for a way that we missed what every critic I have read has praised. We never found it.
