Disney sets global box office record with $3 billion

‘Finding Nemo,’ ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ lead studio
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 3 — The Walt Disney Co. sailed into uncharted waters in 2003 with sea tales “Finding Nemo” and “The Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl,” leading it to a record $3 billion at global box offices, the film studio said Wednesday.
SO FAR, Disney films have amassed $1.48 billion in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales and another $1.6 billion in international territories topping the $2.86 billion set by Sony Corp.’s film studio last year when “Spider-Man” spun its web of magic over movie box offices.
“I wish I could tell you we were so smart and had this great strategy,” said Disney film studio chairman Dick Cook. (But) “in order for anything to work like this, you’ve got to have great product, you’ve got to have great marketing, you’ve got to have great distribution.”
Disney’s Buena Vista film distribution division also became the first distributor to release two films that topped $300 million at U.S. and Canadian box offices — “Finding Nemo,” a co-production with Pixar Animation Studios Inc., and ”Pirates,” which was inspired by a theme park ride, according to film tracker Exhibitor Relations.
“Nemo” is this year’s No. 1 movie so far with $340 million worth of tickets sold in domestic markets in the United States and Canada.
“It was about picking the right films. ‘Finding Nemo’ was a no-brainer, but ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ was kind of an untested idea of taking a theme park ride and making a movie,” said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Los Angeles-based box office tracker Exhibitor Relations Inc.
The $3 billion mark does not include Disney’s Miramax division, which has had its own hits, such as horror movie parody “Scary Movie 3.” Miramax also is looking for big box office from “Cold Mountain,” which debuts over the holidays.

Well at least with Pixar by our side. But lets see if Eisner does the right thing and reups with them. If not, we're screwed in the Animation Department.
