There is no repeating material from the 2 disc to the 4 disc set. Look at it as a 6 disc set that has been broken up into two parts.

I don't know, is he? He can spell simple three letter words like Y-O-U.

The theatrical trailer is supposed to be on the EE as an easter egg, although I haven't found it yet.

He can also capitalize, and use an apostrophe. The sheer amazement of it.

go to the chapter search button, and go all the way over to the end, it should be there on the second disc. Do the same thing on disc one and get the Gollum mtv awards speech.

I tried that and couldn't find the trailer if there is one. The Gollum Speech was easy to find on Disc 1.

Has anyone actually found it? That's how to find the preview on FOTR, but there was no preview for ROTK.

It's not the same movie twice. This isn't like, say, American Pie, where they added in a few seconds of titilation to get you to buy the film again. These are two different versions of the film that are substantially different from one another. One is the Theatrical version that was compromised by the need to have the film a maximum of 3 hours for theatrical exhibition. As much as we hate to admit it, these are an investment by the production company to make money for them and the theater owners. The other is a version that is not compromised by length requirements (and sore butt requirements) and can tell the story with a little more depth for the fans. This is essentially a 6 disc set. Some folks, though, are not rich spoiled people and might only want one version or the other instead of being required to buy both versions (like, say ET was going to be-although they backed down on that one and made the original version an extra). The two disc set has the Theatrical version and the promotional material. That includes trailers. The more extensive 4 disc set has the extended version and since that is really for the fans, rather than the casual viewer, it has the making of material and other extras dealing with things the fans might be more inclined to be interested in.
If you do buy the extended edition, there is a $5 rebate for if you wish to purchase the Theatrical version.

Maybe we're just people with jobs.

It doesn't cost much to buy both versions which are two very different versions of the movie. Plus the extras are different with no overlapping material. I have both and while I do prefer the EE, the theatrical version cost me about $7 through Columbia House so I'll just keep it.

Buying both of these is much better than double dipping for a better transfer of the exact same movie.

True, because the theatrical version DVD cost about all of about 15 bucks. And you get $5 back for buying the extended.

I think my total cost for both sets (6 discs) is about $30. Clearly I'm part of an elite group.

Can you be more specific? I tried this and could not find anything. I did find the easter egg on disc one.

Yeah, I think the instruction was an assumption based upon the FOTR EE. That took you to the preview for TTT that was tacked on to the later theatrical showings of FOTR. They didn't make one for ROTK to tack onto TTT, so it stands to reason that it doesn't exist on TTT EE disc. It makes no sense for them to just put the trailer on it if it's on the TE disc.

well, the super DUPER edition that comes with the bonus Gollum swag would push the total experience to 11 DVDs, right? i think i'll stick with the regular EE, unless that bonus Gollum disc is really good.

That bonus Gollum disc is very, very good. But then, I am a fan (and collector) of the Sideshow Weta figures, so I guess I would be expected to think that way, wouldn't I?

Assuming that there will be some kind of bonus disc with the ROTK EE set, that would make an even dozen.

Yeah, buying the same movie twice. I love this line:

"the extended doesnt have that much extras in the appendices"
If seven and a half hours of video extras, plus hundreds of stills doesn't count as "much extras" then I suppose every other DVD on the market is going to REALLY disappoint you, because TTT: EE has more extras than pretty much every other DVD EVER.
