HD Receiver? To buy or not to buy...

I'm contemplating buying an HD receiver for my 50" Toshiba HDTV. I know there are only a few channels that Direct TV offers in HD, but will I notice that big of a difference with those channels? I mean how close to DVD quality will it be? Thanks.

DVD is only 480i. HD is either 1080i or 720p. So HD is much higher than dvd quality.

Going from DVD to HD (especially for a football game) can be even more of a jump than going from VHS to DVD.

BTW, if you have a progressive scan player: DVDs would be 480p rather than 480i.

With a good channel, HD Net, Discovery HD the difference is night and day. True HD is far superior to DVD "quality"

That's a nice baseline HD receiver. It's very common and does a pertty good job with HD. However you can find it cheaper than that by buying off of ebay or at some of the dedicated dish retailers.

Your 50" Toshiba displays at 720p

I currently get ABC, ESPN, INHD and INHD2 via cable for my 50" Toshiba. The INHD stuff looks incredible. Monday Night Football looks incredible. ESPN has Sunday night football and Playmakers in High Def, it looks very sharp.

I want DiscoveryHD (lack of programming but the programming they have is supposed to be the finest broadcast picture quality out there)

True, but the picture is encoded in 480i. It is the software in the dvd players that create the 480p.

If you are a Dishnetwork customer, you can get their HD receiver (6000) for $149. There are some reports of people getting them at $99 too.

The rumor i 've heard is that from around end of Nov, Dish Network will be offering the HD Equip (Dish + Receiver) on lease ($5 pet mth) to new members

This would surely be better than sinking your own money into expensive equip, which ties you down to only one provider - hope DTV comes out with a similar plan - i would jump it

I just don't see the sense in buying a receiver when renting them is so cheap.
