I'd probably stay away from the Sampos. I'd read that the previous version didn't do pal-ntsc conversion correctly.

Yeah, but this particular Sampo was designed specifically to correct that problem. At least from what I read. I can't speak from personal experience.... I'm just sayin'.

Anyone know if the Malata DVP-558 doesnot have the overheating problems of the 520 and actually has a functioning standby mode. Also, does this new model not feature X-Y scaling or was that an omission of the site?

I bought a JVC XV-N50BK from HKflix & it is GREAT! Has played everything I've put in it with no problems. Their service is excellent, as well. I must recommend the JVC!

Cool! Hey, are you in the US? If so, did you have to buy a voltage converter? I ask because one is listed as an optional item when you purchase the JVC player and I was wondering if the players they used can handle US voltage or if the converteris an actual necesity.

I live in California & no I did not buy any adapter or converter. The dvd player works right out of the box. There is no codes to put in or anything needed to watch any dvd, regardless of region or format. Just Plug & Play!

Excellent. I've had a good track record with JVC so far so it's tied for the top spot (along with the Malata) with regards to which DVD I'm considering the most in this list. Assuming you have this hooked up to another JVC component, does the AV Compu Link work just fine?

I have not used the AV Compu Link feature.

Thanks to you I'm really considering the JVC. So unless someone can reasonably convince me otherwise, come next semester, I'll have that DVD players as my first multi-regional player ever.

I have the JVC 602 from HKFLIX and while I think it is a good player, it has shown some quirks that I am wondering show up in the new N50 model. These are:

Subtitles not shutting off when they are supposed to: In the movie Phenomenon there's a scene where Portuguese is being spoken and the subtitles come on, as they should. However when they revert to using English again, the subtitles do not turn off on their own (needs to be done manually).

Problems with multiple angle segments: Mallrats makes use of this feature, though the player randomly freezes for a time either when multi-angle material is encoutered or when it completes.

Do the new models feature these quirks also? (I'd also like to hear from anyone who has a 600 series player and its behavior on these two discs).

I have the movie Phenomenon & did not experience this problem. I do not have the other movie. However, I have not had a single, noticable problem, yet, with the JVC N50.

That's very good news... although my wallet will not be happy to hear it (esp since it seems the new model comparable to the 602 is the N77...)

I've heard that the N* series doesn't have manual region selection but is still RCE proof.

By the way, if anyone has Mallrats and one of the new N models (or one of the 500/600 series) from HKFLIX would LOVE to know if your player plays it ok...

My N50 does not have manuel region code settings. It automatically reads any disc you put in & plays it. I'm not sure what RCE proof is?
