It is probably more expensive to get someone to repair it instead of getting a new one.

To buy another system would cost you around $30 (and that includes getting another controller with it as well). Fixing a DC would be more.

You actually can probably fix it yourself. My DC has stopped working a few times, and I've popped the cover off and messed with the tiny screw by the laser to fix it.
Here's a page with some pics on where the screw is at...this is actually how to get the DC to read CD-RW's....but it fixed all my other problems as well.

You can get it fixed for $55 @ http://www.sega-parts.com/products/repair-prices.htm

They are also selling a refurbished DC with the SmashPack game for $69.

Back in summer my DC was also starting to crap out as it was having the disc read errors even on games that were spotless. I had to try multiple attempts to load the games. Believe it or not, turning the DC upside down will extend the life of your DC by a few months.

If that doesn't work, then last time I was in Gamestop (which was a long while ago), they had about 10 DC's shrinkwrapped only the system and cables (no box) all marked $49.99. They might still have some in your area, be sure to ask.
