In this week's Entertainment Weekly (#737) 7 of the top ten highest grossing dvd sales titles are Widescreen where Widescreen and Fullscreen are availalbe on separate discs.

1. Adventures of Indiana Jones (WIDE)
2. The Matrix Reloaded (WIDE)
3. Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (WIDE)
4. 28 Days Later (WIDE)
5. The Lion King (Only widescreen available)
6. The Italian Job (WIDE)
7. Scarface (WIDE)
8. Wrong Turn (Wide and Full)
9. 2 Fast 2 Furious (WIDE)
10. The Matrix (Only widescreen available)

Finally, people are wising up. This is promising information for the future of dvds, I just hope the studios are paying attention.

Thanks LBPound for the correction!

The Lion King is only available in widescreen, FYI. Reassuring numbers, for sure. Thanks for posting.

Even if most people still do not have a widescreen TV, the fact that most people now have bigger TV screens is a big help in getting people to accept those black bars.

The future is looking good for OAR.

is "Wrong Turn" really supposed to be on that list. You are trying to tell me that Wrong Turn (i liked this movie by the way) sold more copies than the Matrix? WTF

Actually, the future is looking better, but not good. OAR can still mean black bars on Widescreen TV's so I'm sure an effort will have to be made to keep cinescope ratio movies from being cropped to 16:9.

Considering The Matrix has been available for 4 years and everyone and their grandmother has a copy, it makes perfect sense. Its placement on the list at all just means a lot of grandfathers are finally picking it up.

This is not a new trend. Although things were looking iffy in the spring, widescreen DVDs have consistently been outselling their full-screen counterparts since the early summer, according to Video Business. You can check the archived charts at www.videobusiness.com as proof.

It looks like EW is just reprinting VB's chart, but a week later because of its lead time. Here's what VB's current one looks like:

1. HULK - WIDE
2. THE MATRIX RELOADED - WIDE
3. CHARLIE'S ANGELS: FULL THROTTLE-UNRATED/WIDE
4. ADVENTURES OF INDIANA JONES - WIDE
5. THE SOPRANOS: FOURTH SEASON
6. 28 DAYS LATER - WIDE
7. THE LION KING - WIDE
8. SCARFACE ANNIVERSARY EDITION-WIDE
9. THE ITALIAN JOB-WIDE
10. WRONG TURN

Yeah ok thanks. Ever been to Amazon? Their top tens always have the widescreen higher than the fullframe.

I've heard that these lists do not include Wal-Mart sales in their figures, and Wal-Mart is the leading seller of DVDs and primarly stocks P+S discs.

Still good to see though.

Dealman,
when you say that do you mean, walmart dosent carry what is available from the distributers, or they just carry a larger number of ps than oar. If its the latter I cant see where the walmart numbers would skew the results one way or another. If oar is what the customers want they will not be swayed by which is in stock in higher numbers. They will indeed buy what they want.

You've heard wrong. The Video Business chart includes Wal-Mart and other mass merchants.

Unfortunately good taste is still missing in most of the general public.

Interesting how the fool-screen version of Indy doesn't even make the Top 10 when the OAR is number 1.

Maybe the Matrix being up there had something to do with it being $7.99 at Best Buy that week.
