Tomorrow morning, I'd imagine. The Digital Bits says they'll have a review up at midnight.

i've been asked if i wanted to buy a 4 disc edition or a 5 disc edition of this set.

what's the difference between the 4 disc and the 5 disc?

The extra disc is about the making of the Gollum statuette which is included in the gift/collectors' set. You can't get that extra disc outside of eBay-type places unless you buy the whole package, which is considerably more than the 4-disc. It's the 4-disc for me, personally.

TDB already has the review up. They say that the picture quality is tha same as in the FOTR:EE, which is disappointing...

Why is that disappointing? The video quality on the FOTR EE was some of the best I have ever seen on DVD. Plus, TTT EE has a longer running time so I wouldn't expect it to be any better.

Compared to recent discs like Hulk and Matrix reloaded, the FOTR:EE looks clearly inferior (at least to my eyes). I probably will get slammed here for saying that, but it is my opinion.

You may be right, but I've hardly ever seen a New Line dvd that disappointed me on the video quality.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I think you are definitely in the minority on this one.

From reviews around the web:
2 reviewers here at DVDTalk gave the video a 4 1/2 out of 5
DVDFile also gave it a 4 1/2 out of 5
The Digital Bits gave it an "A"
DVD IGN gave it a 10 out of 10

I happened to think it was a wonderful transfer.

But when you compare it with recent discs like Matrix reloaded and Hulk, dont you see a difference? I took another look at the FOTR:EE last night and noticed that he Bitrate lingered around 5 Mbps for almost the entire movie, while for Matrix Reloaded, it lingered around 7 Mbps.

I just saw in the HTF or the TDB review that the bitrate on the TTT:EE is around 7 Mbps. So there is some hope here that it may look better than the FOTR:EE.

I honestly don't think it's much worse than those movies, and it's definitely not "clearly inferior".

The DVDTalk review confirms my fears. The review mentions that the video quality is soft and fine details are not visible. This was exactly the same problem I had with the FOTR:EE.

I disagree with one point in the review though: he FOTR:EE bitrate was nowhere near the 7 to 8 Mbps as she claims. It was consistently aroung 5 Mbps.

I still feel that the transfer on TTT EE is very good. From what I've read it is just as good if not a bit better than the transfer on the FOTR EE and that would be fine with me as it was probably the best transfer of any live-action film on dvd last year with the exception of SW E II.

I have a suspicion that I'm going to like this set a lot more than this site's reviewer.

Me eight.

Seriously, there was discussion over at the HTF that a filtering was applied to these films - moreso than what was actually on the official screener and PAL versions. This filtering appears to be what is eliminating some of the finer details.

DVDfile just gave the video a 5/5 so it must be pretty good.
