Xbox Live on fire, Socom 2 breaking records online

I put these in the same thread to see the differences.

Xbox Live on fire
http://www.gamespot.com/xbox/news/news_6078272.html
Microsoft announces that its Xbox Live online gaming service enjoyed its busiest weekend ever earlier this month.

Microsoft has today announced that last weekend was the busiest ever for its Xbox Live online gaming service. On Sunday, November 2, no less than 83,652 players spent a total of 262,268 hours online. The most popular Xbox Live game on Sunday was the recently released Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3, which recorded a total of 24,478 players for the day, and at one point accounted for 6,731 players simultaneously

SCEA reveals that, only two days after its release, SOCOM II: Navy SEALs is already breaking records online.

Sony Computer Entertainment America has today revealed that SOCOM II: U.S. Navy SEALs, which was released on November 4, is already breaking records online. SOCOM II has rapidly replaced its predecessor as the number one online PS2 game in terms of simultaneous players, with a figure of over 22,000 already recorded. The original SOCOM typically supports up to 14,500 simultaneous players during peak times.

"With SOCOM II: U.S. Navy SEALs, we have created one of the most intense and complete online experiences available on any console or personal computer," said Seth Luisi, senior producer, Sony Computer Entertainment America. "SOCOM II raises the bar for online gaming, and we are thrilled about the amazing consumer adoption in the first two days."
I highlighted both numbers for Xbox Live since I'm not sure if the Sony one is simultaneous or not, it seems to indicate it is but just in case I kept both XBL highlighted to pick from.

It sounds to me that the 22k quote is simultaneous...

Sony's PS2 customer base is a lot larger than Xboxs.
I'm not sure how much more, but I know it's ridiculous.

And for Sony to have around the same numbers as Xbox is still very small.

Pretty weak...

And not to mention that of Sony's 25,000 people playing, 24,000 of them were on dial-up.

How do you figure that? Xbox recorded 6,731 players simultaneously on Live and there's over 24,000 simultaneous players on SOCOM II. That's a large difference in my book!

Actually is 6,731 playing Rainbow Six 3 simultaneously, not total players on Live at one time.

In other news, Sony reported 6 players were simultaneously playing Gameday 2004 last Sunday, a 200% increase over the previous week.

SOCOM II is broadband-only.

Considering that the installed base of PS2 over XBOX, it's not as great as it looks. PS2 is ~60 million while XBOX is ~10 million.

Also the fact that the PS2 online system is free and allows dial-up people to play as well.

But 4 of those are beta testers still testing out the bugs days after the game is out

How long until it's hacked like the original SOCOM though and you have some fool on dialup in a room ruining everyone's gaming experience?

I dont think it was "hacked", you just have to network the ps2 w/ your PC, make the PS2 think your NIC is the broadband connection. There are people on xbox live doing the exact same thing.

Not sure why some of you brought up football games besides wanting to bash Sony, since I highlighted RAINBOW 6 which is apparently the most popular game on XBL at the moment and SOCOM 2 for the PS2 . Two similar types of games.
