Master and Commander reviews

Being a Peter Weir fan, I definitely will be awaiting this film. And I was very glad to read these:

"If Weir were to score his fourth directing Oscar nomination for the film, it would not be undeserved."

http://www.screendaily.com/story.asp...d=14869&r=true

"Not since Hitchcock's "Lifeboat" has a film that takes place almost completely on the water been so absolutely involving."

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/click/...=1&rid=1213940

"Rare proof that a gigantic production in contemporary Hollywood can possess a distinctive personality, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World proves as bracing as a stiff wind on the open sea." - Variety

Sounds great!

We're working up a review for the film so expect it in the next week.

All I can say is that at the screening I attended about 1/2 of the critics hated the film and the other 'liked' it.

I can't see it being oscar material, but if you liked Das Boot you might like M&C

If it's as good as Das Boot, then it IS Oscar material!

agreed. I haven't seen M&C yet, but the previews give me mixed feelings towards it.

Master and Commander is for me one of the most anticipated releases of this Fall/Winter Season (the other being The Last Samurai). I'm sort of expecting it to be a big-budget version of A&E's Hornblower series of films (perhaps too with a sprinkle (leadership dynamics, crew interactions) of Mutiny on the Bounty tossed in (without the mutiny part of course)). For Geoff or anyone else who might have already seen Master and Commander and is familiar too with the Hornblower series and the Bounty films, how would the films compare/contrast?

To be clear. If you like the STYLE of film like Das Boot you might like it. I think Das Boot is MUCH MUCH better than M&C but again not oscar material.
