Just picked up Salman Rushdie's Satanic Verses....
What are your thoughts on this book? I have only started it, but I am really into it already. I'm still curious as to what all the controversy was about though. Is it only extreme islamic an other religious sects that have a problem with the book?

I started reading Rushdie's Midnight's Children two nights ago. I've put off Satanic Verses for years, thinking I may want at least a lay person's understanding of the Koran and Islam before opening it.
From what I remember of the hoopla around the book when it was written, it was mainly Islam that found the book blasphemous. Although I've also heard that the examinations of good/bad can also be interperted as applying to Western religans such as Catholicism and Christianity.
Hope you enjoy the book.
Welcome to the forum, btw.

I read it when I was in high school, and I didn't see what the big deal was. It was a great book, amazing characters and a detailed, involving story. But I think I may have been too young and not educated enough to appreciate it. One of these days I'll re-read it.
