Everest remake... kinda

They are making a movie based on the disastrous 1996 climb where several members of a climbing team were caught in one of the mountain's infamous blizzards.
The thing is, an IMAX crew was part of the doomed expedition, and an award-winning documentary filmed DURING the actual events already exists:

Now how on Earth can anyone expect to make a movie that reenacts something, when the entire event was filmed as it happened and turned into a documentary?

It's not unusual for a film to be made of an event that has been documented on film/video before. Everyone saw Black Hawk Down years ago... on CNN. Even Party Monster and RKO 281 were "remakes" of documentaries...

Have you seen the IMAX Everest? It doesn't contain very much of the storm or the rescue. Yes the crew was involved but they didn't film much of it and end up relying heavily upon photomontage of stills.
Frankly Breashears' Everest film isn't very good. Given the restrictions that the equipment placed on him and his crew it's understandable, but the finished film contains very little climbing above camp 3 and resorts to some rather pathetic "cheats" (ie. recreations filmed at lower elevation and stills that are panned over to look like film shot at the summit)

A better title would've been "Into Thin Air," oh wait...
Actually, there was a tv-movie made from Jon Krakauer's "Into Thin Air" not too long ago.
