samurai fiction (r1) playing prob?

hello,

just wondering if anyone else has had problems playing
the region 1, tokyo shock release of
samurai fiction?

i played it on my skyworth.
and it always craps outs starting in chapter 34...
it starts to crap out in chapter 34 during the
fight between hanbei and fat fencing student...
it continues to play on, but frames get paused or skipped...
at times i get the pixilated sections on the screen...
it gets progressively worse in the following chapters video-wise
but, the audio is fine...
all chapters prior to 34 play fine and sound fine
it really acts like the few defective discs i've had before...

so, then i tried it on my apex 600a...
went to chapters 32 and on...
tested them back and forth...
nothing wrong...
sounds great and video doesn't crap out
BUT...
the video isn't perfect...
on the apex, the video is stuck in a forced-stretch
full-screen mode...
i couldn't get it into the dvd's normal widescreen...
(note: i'm using a 4:3 ntsc tv)
so, on the apex
it sounds fine and video plays
but, is stuck viewed in stretched full-screen

so, then i tested it on my parents' toshiba player...
went straight to chapter 32 and played it through to 34 to 35...
no probs...
went back and forth in the chapters...
then i watched it straight through from chapter 34 on...
no problems at all...
perfect sound and video...

so, i'm wondering if the dvd is defective
or is it just
a mastering problem on the dvd production end
or
player incompatability issues?

i'm also wondering if i should bring this dvd back for an exchange
i got it at a comic shop
and i know i'll have to wait for them to get another copy
from their distributor...
which is about 2-3 weeks before
i can tell if it's just a defective dvd...

so, anyone else have any problems
with the r1 dvd of samurai fiction?
(note - i haven't tried disc 2 yet
w/ samurai non-ficiton on it. will post again after about
disc 2 if it's problem-free or not)

I think I had one spot about 40 minutes in that gave me a jump (like a layer change does once in a while). Haven't touched the 2nd disc yet.
