Crimson Skies High Road to Revenge is a lot of game for the price thanks to the 12 plus hours of single player and huge potential for online fun. When compared to Midtown Madness 3 and MechAssault, there seems to be extra motivation to complete CS's single player game beyond just getting the best vehicle. The story is compelling and mission types varied enough to keep me playing way past bedtime. The multiplayer game as we got to experience it prior to release was enjoyable but a little sterile compared to what we know it's going to be when the public has at it. And as we saw with MM3 and MA, really that's when things get exciting. Strangers talking trash in the skyways with rubber chickens fluttering from their wings should be enough to move Crimson Skies up on your list of must have Xbox Live games. With no online component for Secret Weapons Over Normandy, Battlestar Galactica or any other flight-shooter, you're getting the best such experience on Xbox this pre-holiday season.

I picked it up at EB and they were going fast. Game is great and Multiplayer is a gas. Can make you queasy though, dogfighting online is very frenetic.

I was thinking maybe we can set up a couple of squadrons of 12 pilots each. Why 12? This will give us a good chance to get 8 pilots for a given dogfight nite.

We can then have either intra-forum, DVDtalkers only, dogfight or vs. the other people in tivocommunity, HTF, or AVS forums.

Thoughts? I'm sorry if I'm jumping the gun. I really like the idea of dogfighting with a group of known people.

Haven't seen it mentioned in any review yet, so I'm guessing it didn't make it in the xbox version -- is there anyway to customize your plane loadout from the bottom up -- weight, armor levels, how many guns, hard points, etc. or is it just a matter of choosing which weapons you want?

After initially jumping on Live with Crimson Skies, I didn't care for it too much. It seemed like MechAssault in the sky. By that I mean that it was too simple. I'm not sure what I expected, but I didn't like it too much at first.

That didn't last too long though. I found a Flag Heist game and immediately my interest picked up. After that, I played a the chicken game and like it even more. Once I started getting more comfortable with the controls and the way the planes fly I realized I was enjoying the dogfight games a lot more too. By the time I finished playing last night, I was loving this game. I can't wait to play the single player campaign, but this is one of the better Live games IMO.

There's not a lot of talking but I think that's because everyone is just trying to focus on flying. Once everyone becomes more familiar with the game I would expect (hope) that there will be more strategy. It's cool to hear a teammate call out that they have the chicken but someone's on their tail. It's even more cool to take out that enemy and back up your teammate.

BTW, Thong T and I ended up in a game last nght, but I didn't see any other dvdtalkers. I guess we all need to update our friends lists.

How do you send an invite? At first I thought there was no way to invite someone to join you but I received an invite from Thong T (imposter71).

Gromit a lot of us are picking it up in the next week with the TRU B2G1F sale :) To do an invite they have to be on playing the same game and you highlight their name and an invite option will appear (I think). Also when you host a game you can make it so that only people in your Friends list can join.

Gromit - You can go into your Friends list and hit A when highlighting a friend's name, one of the options is to invite them to your game. In CS, you can also select multiple names and then invite all instead of doing it once per name.

Also, the voice chat is distance related. You can only talk to and hear your team's pilots when they are near. Those across the map will not hear you and you won't hear them. Kinda like MotoGP 2.

tommy28 - Planes fly at a default speed. Not sure if the default speed are all same for all planes or different for each. However, there is a boost/afterburner and brake that you can use. The afterburner last for a good 5, 6 seconds before depleting. It refills very fast btw.

Tuan Jim - I don't think you can change the loadout on the planes for Live. Haven't play the single player missions yet so not sure if you can in there or not.

Btw, let me say that I really suck at flying games. Still having a lot of fun with this game even I'm getting my a$$ handed to me by pretty much every Tom, Dick, and Harry out there. :) Gromit sent me down to the ground in a burning, smoking wreck many many times last nite. Thanks a lot man! :D

this is also my first impression. all i've done so far are the dogfight and team dogfights. seems like mechassault in the air.

I'm PM'ing BBuy. I'm thinking of buying it today to insure I have it and then returning and rebuying on Sunday.

My plan is: Hit BBuy first (it's a 100% pricematch as I already have a manager who assured me he will let me use the coupon) and see if I can everything I want. If not, then I'll take a trip to Toys R Us to pick up another coupon, see if I can find anything there, and if there's stuff I still want then go to Circuit City (who will also do it... it's where I got the 3 GC games last week).

But Best Buy is my main place.

I'm a 1 dot-er too. I simply just suck at this. :) Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I do use a lot of the special moves. But seems like people can get on my tail real easy.

I know you got me at least a couple of times. I'm not sure which plane you were using, but I was able to keep the brakes on and stay on your tail even when you were making tight turns (I was using a Coyote). More than anything else, I think that was a "plane selection" advantage vs. any skill on my part. I was surprised that I only got 4 kills in that last game, with 10+ deaths. I don't usually have that much fun playing a game that poorly. :)

I only got you after you were already blowing smoke from a previous fight. I was using that big blue plane. NOt sure what it's called. I tried Devastator and it's a much faster plane than that blue one.

young - seems like the black button shows you the closest enemy. So it switches depending on who's closest. I guess...

Also, the voice thing... The white button is to broadcast to your entire team. The other team still won't hear you. Could be usefull to call for help when your team isn't near you...

You mean like walk in, return them, tell them the deal, and say you just want to buy them back? I guess even if they refuse, they still have to give you your money back since they'd be sealed, and you'd have a receipt.

My Best Buy is weird, I have no idea if they'd have them on Sunday or not. I think they have them now, at least according to the website, but they tend to sell out quick. Patience is a virtue I lack :D

So when you just talk into the mike, you're broadcasting to everyone close to you, including the other team? I thought the white button was a "talk to both" teams button. If so, that really changes the strategy. For "chicken status updates" you'd want to always hold the white button.

Yup. When you're just talking, you're talking to your team mates who are near you. When you push the white button, you broadcast to your entire team no matter where they are. I don't think you can talk to the other team. A couple of guys I ran into tested this theory out already. Usually there's smack-talking between teams, but I don't hear any, which would prove them right.

Hi guys, I spent 3 hours looking for the game last night to no avail, I went to 3 BB , 2CC, 2 TRU's, 2 wal-mart, 2 gamestops and 1 Ebgames, and they either didnt have it or were sold out, but they can not stop me, I will get this game today :)

I played the Dogfight portion online this morning. There are other online games in "CS" but I only tried this one.

The game is more or less like MechAssault(same makers) but you need more patience and skill in the dogfights. The cool thing is that you can change planes if you find one unattended and you can also land and jump into the Gunner's seat and take out planes via guided missle. Be warned, the missle leaves the gun quickly and you're steering it into an enemy. Meanwhile you're sitting duck if you stay too long in the Gun. Power ups and health fall through the sky by parachute when you destroy enemies. Catching them is kinda tricky but of course not impossible. I didn't play in a squadron but I imagine it's no different than the "Team Games" on MechAssault.

But I could be wrong....

I played a couple of dogfights a few minutes ago. It was my first time playing at all. The first time, I got 1 kill and 5 deaths, the second 3 kills and 8 deaths. I did kill a really good pilot that had 15 kills in the game, though :D

I tried all the fancy moves and such, but once someone got on my tail it was over :(

I think Microsoft published both games, but Mechassault was developed by Day One where Crimson Skies was developed by Microsoft (internal).

Either way, they are very different. IMO, Crimson Skies offers much more in terms of online gameplay (just my opinion).

This game is great, but boy do I suck at it. I don't think I'll ever make it to a rating beyond 1 dot. It doesn't seem to matter how much I play, I just suck. Most likely, I'll get bored with it this week and won't play online much at all. The single player campaign seems pretty good, but with too many other games to play, I doubt I'll stick with it.

I have found planning ahead helps a lot when you're shooting at moving targets like planes. Even when an enemy is behind a buidling or mountian you can still see where they're going and you can keep them in target until the shot is clear.

I think it'll be fun once all of us get online together. We're just no match against the 4-dotters and the stars pilots. Personally, I don't know what you're talking about Gromit. Everytime I ran up against you, I got wasted. If you say you suck, hell, that means, that I suck even worse! not sure why you're still staying at 1-dot. I'm up to 3-dot now. <shrug>

I agree, it will be more fun to play people you "know" on a regular basis. I played SOCOM for the better part of a year, mainly because I was playing a regular game for several months. I'm still interested in getting together online with everyone here, I just doubt I'll jump into games at random that much.

Back to me dying too much... I wish the controller would rumble when you are getting shot (does it already?). I think my problem is that I get so focused on the target I'm chasing down and I don't notice that I'm getting shot up from behind.

I found out that playing the first level of the single player game gave me a few tips on some tricks, like a barrel roll and the quick turn-around. I am gonna have to try them :)

Just jumped in online to play a quick game before I start single player. I was amazed at how easy it was to just jump into it and play pretty decent. I was able to rank 2nd in the team game I played. Fun stuff so far.

For you NYC DVDTalkers- TRU in Union Square and Times Square had tons of copies of Crimson Skies this morning. I picked one up to play on my roomies XBox although he does not have Live :(.

I stormed in to the 'Zone' and an employee asked if I needed help He instantly grabbed me copies of the new Castlevania and SSX3 for the PS2. I then asked if I could buy an XBox game as well and he automatically said "Crimson Skies?" before running over to a display.

Nice! Now if only every retail employee was as friendly and helpful.

Out of nowhere, I now have 4 dots in Crimson Skies.

I played a chicken game and decided to just man the turret near our base. Got 19 kills and jumped up to 3 dots. Then I played a couple of flag games with a group of guys that were about the same skill level as me.

Has anyone played the single player campaign much? I played for a couple of hours today. It's actually pretty good. The story is decent and the voice acting is really impressive. Plus they make the missions interesting by mixing up the objectives.

I have no clue how the dot/star system works, but after playing only 1 game and getting about 14 kills I am up to 3 dots....


I am onto the second part of the singleplayer mode, overall I am enjoying it greatly, although I wish there was an option to 'free-roam' as it seems once you start doing missions you cant really stop to pick up tokens and explore.

I blow up the zeps to grab some easy $$ from time to time. Currently, I'm in the Arixo map looking for the Titanium mine.

Btw, I noticed that my ranking went way up once I started playing different types of games. Now, the dots... I had 3, then I picked BullDog plane to play in Team Dogfight. I got whooped 0-12!!! After that game, I dropped back down to 2 dots. So it's related to some sort of kill-death ratio...

The person who sets up the game can turn statistic tracking on or off.

Based on what I read on another forum, your ranking depends more on how you do against other people. Get shot down by someone with less dots than you and you lose points. Shoot down someone with more dots than you and you gain points. There's a formula, but that's the basic idea.

What sucks is that it doesn't reward flag runners who get shot down a lot, but contribute a lot for their team. All the more reason to ignore the stats.

I got ONE kill and over 10 deaths but I had a kill of 0 because I killed myself (against the hangar thingie). Well, it's usually a combo of planes dependent on the map. If it's Chicago (my favorite) or Arizo, I will take a Devistator and use up all my rockets before I switch it out for the fast planes on those maps. After I grab one of those, I focus only on grabbing the chicken or flag and eluding the other team.

If it's a map with slower planes, I do the opposite. Grab the chicken/flag first with a fast plane I picked out and keep returning it until I'm almost dead. Then I switch it out and mop up the other team.

Perhaps it's just the teams I've been playing, but I'm very successful with the strategy. Rarely do I get killed unless I'm in a turret.

Also, learn and practice every special move that's available. I've gotten out of many a jam with a barrell roll / reversal combo. Plus the Suicide Dive move with full throttle is very useful on all the maps. You just have to know when to pull up.

I just picked this up today and played for a half an hour. It looks and plays great. I jumped online for a quick dogfight and had my clocked cleaned. But more importantly I didn't see ANY lag at all. I also couldn't hear anyone talking....I guess they were too busy converting my plane into a fireball ;)

This game is giving me a headache. I'm trying to observe what the higher rated and "star" players are doing and I can't figure it out. It seems some are using their secondary weapon more than the primary.

vbellino - It depends on the type of game you're playing. If you're playing team games, then you only hear your teammates near you. If they are far, you'll have to press the white button to talk to them. If you're playing dogfigt, then you can hear everyone near you and press white button to talk to everyone in game.

Giantrobo - from what I can see, the experienced players don't fly slow too often. Their flight path is pretty erratic. It's really hard to get a stead lead to shoot at them b/c they're always weaving around. Some players do abuse their secondary weapons alot, especially with that lighting gun...

Also, is there a way to switch the targetting reticle (yellow thing) to a different enemy? It'd be nice to be able to cycle through nearby enemies like you can in most flying games.

The black button will temporarily lock the camera on your enemy if he's in the area. It's really good for orienting yourself if you have a bad guy behind you.

I noticed that -- but there's seriously no way to cycle through targets -- really weird. Also Zeppelins seem considerably easier to bring down in this version. Out of the two I've destroyed so far, I haven't even noticed if you can effectively target the engines or gun turrets and make a difference rather than just shooting the main target. In the PC version, it was pretty cool because in certain missions you had to slow down the enemy zeps to a certain speed before you could board them -- and that meant knocking off a certain number of engines -- not too many, not too few -- of course you also had to take out the gun turrets, and the ammo type you chose made a big difference.

can we start a tread for dvdtalk Xbox matches!!!id start it but my spelling sucks:)....

i think Saturdays match can get lost quickly!!!this way we can keep updating the list with Multiple matches for all xbox games!!!

example!!id love to play a newbie in ESPN foodball!!!!????everytime i look for a game i get Pro and get my clock cleaned!

I swear I wasn't just gunning for you, you just happened to find your way into my sights every 30 seconds or so :lol:.

I found that I'm pretty good at the dogfights, but the chicken and flag games really had me on the ropes. EVERY time I got that dang chicken in the canyon level, I would get either right by the landing zone, or literally half a second from scoring (meaning, on the runway), and someone in the dang anti-aircraft gun would blow me to bits! A little team cover in that situation would have been helpful :D.

sound good??? How about using the XBox GamerTag list stickied to the top of the forum, but also being sure to delete your post after your match? If everyone posted match times, that thread could bloat pretty quickly, but if people were vigilant about deleting their posts appropriately, then the thread could stay at a manageable level.

gatordeb, do you use the codes with xbox live, or is it only for single player, I saw you on live at 6:30am today but I had to log on some hours of my 24/7 mode in espn 2k4, I will hopefully be playing either this or top spin on live tonight if you want to play

I haven't tried it on XBOX Live. I don't use codes on XBOX Live, just when I play single player modes.

I'm getting Top Spin today and I'd like to try that out, however, today's full for me and I work tonight so I need to get some sleep too... how about Wednesday? :)

Nope. We only had 8 or 10 people on all nite. and I set the server for 16 players.
