Recommend more movies like Requiem for a Dream or Donnie Darko

Few months ago I watched Requiem for a Dream and I loved it. It is the first movie that left me with this weird kind of thought provoking feeling that lasted for a few days. Seemed like the only thing I thought about for a while was that movie, it had a serious effect on me.

Since then I have not been able to find another movie that does that. I read somewhere online that if I liked Requiem I might like Donnie Darko, and I did. Eventhough they are totally different movies, the endings of both make you think rather than just watching the movie and never giving it a second though.

Could any of you recommend some movies I might like?

I haven't watched Requiem for a Dream yet, but I think you'll like Memento. And try anything by David Lynch.

Try "PI"; It's Darren Arnofskys first film. He directed Requiem.

I'd also add Happiness, Trainspotting, Welcome to the Dollhouse, The Doom Generation, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and KIDS to your list. I've got plenty more if you like those...

I asked this same question a while back...someone recommended The Devil's Backbone to me and It is great. If you liked both of these you will most likely enjoy this one too!

Try "The Sweet Hereafter". Not as viscerally gut-wrenching as "Requiem" but emotionally gut-wrenching. You'll still think about it days after watching it.

Seems Mulholland Dr. and Happiness are the first two I will find and buy. Then just keep going down the list.

Donnie Darko and Requiem don't seem especially related, so I'll throw out a bunch of movies in different genres that I liked (since I liked RfoaD and DD).

Irreversible
Amores Perros
Funny Games
Audition
M
Open Your Eyes / Vanilla Sky

If you're after kinda surreal movies that make ya think and have a bit of a twist then I'd definitely recommend some that have been mentioned above:

Lost Highway
Mulholland Drive
Vanilla Sky/Open Your Eyes
Fight Club

Good Movies here too...however, I hated Irreversible. Didnt get anything out of it and it wasnt entertaining to me...but that is only my opinion, just thought i would give it.

I guess I'll take this as an excuse to recommend Dark City. I also heartily agree with The Devil's Backbone recommendation--it's one of my favorite movies.

...I'll second FREEWAY and M and AMORES PERROS and THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE... and add Guy Maddin's TALES FROM THE GIMLI HOSPITAL and, especially, his CAREFUL...

You might want to watch Perfect Blue, if only because Arnofsky recreated a short scene from it verbatim in Requiem for a Dream. It's a very good psychological thriller, if you can make it through the horrendous opening third (or so).

Being John Malkovich is pretty surreal and definitely creative, but it's not as disturbing or thought-provoking as some of the other movies recommended. It's a great movie anyway, though.

If you like Fight Club, pretty much anything Fincher's done (besides Alien 3) is worth a viewing. Se7en's his best movie after Fight Club, and both movies have very nice 2-disc SE DVDs.

I'm kinda surprised nobody's mentioned the golden standards Taxi Driver or Apocalypse Now yet. IMHO Apocalypse Now Redux is superior to the original cut, as long as you skip the French plantation scenes, which should have stayed on the cutting room floor. (Bring on the flames, I dare ya! )

If you're open-minded, you may want to check out some anime series and movies. Like all things, 99% of anime is crap, but there's some damn fine psychological anime out there. Serial Experiments Lain, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Ghost in the Shell are all practically required viewing as far as I'm concerned.

"Crash" - dir. David Cronenberg's very twisted fetish flick
"Exotica" - a time-shifting puzzle with superb direction by Atom Egoyan, excellent performances and intriguing music by Mychael Danna who also scored the underrated "8MM." The Exotica DVD now available could use a remastering but at least it's under $10.
I watch Larry Clark's "Bully' every time it is on cable and his earlier film "Kids" is very disturbing, especially if you have a teenager in the house.
I also loved "The Devil's Backbone, " which creeped me out and actually made me shiver with fear when I watched it in the middle of the night.
Unfortunately "Freaks" and "The Island of Lost Souls" are still missing on DVD.

Because he lifted one scene of a girl in a bathtub it's worth watching the film? Wow.
