Wasn't sure if this belonged here or in DVDTalk.

What do most people pay per rental whether it be averaging out the cost at a place like NetFlix or just renting on an individual basis from a local rental place?

It's all about having competition.

Around here (city of ~ 110,000 people), the going rate for new releases is $2.50 or $3. Personally, I go to a Family Video and Hollywood Video who have both had $1 new releases for the past 18 or so months (on going price war). Hollywood lets you keep it for 5 nights, Family Video only 2 nights but you get a free older title rental. Also, there are 4 or so grocery stores that have $1 new releases, though they tend to get pan & scan, also they are one night only.

To directly answer your question, I haven't paid more than $1 for a new release rental for at least 2 years (prior to the Family Video / Hollywood Video price war I had been going to the grocery stores, back then they would get widescreen), and at least 2/3 of my rentals are 2 for $1 (including one new release). I typically watch at least two rentals per week.

Blockbuster around here charges $4.29 for new releases.

The mom and pop "House of Video" charges about 4 dollars (no tax)

The public library charges....nothing. It's free.

Yeah, I don't really pay to rent stuff anymore.

Blockbuster and Hollywood here in Oklahoma both charge around 4.00 for new releases (I think it's 3.79 + tax). The mom & pop's are all gone. There's a Wherehouse that has $1 rentals but it's kind of far away from me and their selection is limited. The library has free movies but they have had the same 40 or so movies since about 1985 - All VHS and almost all G-Rated and/or educational. I go wherever I have a coupon.

What does NetFlix average out to be, something around $2 per?
