Dallas the Movie: Who shot J.R...err...Bruce Willis..?
[From Zentertainment.com]
Bruce Willis, Collin Farrell and Jessica Lange are rumored to have joined the cast of the film adaption of the tv series DALLAS. Willis will supposedly play oil magnate J.R. Ewing, while Farrell will play Bobby Ewing and Lange will play Sue Ellen. Larry Hagman is also reportedly lined up to do a cameo in the film. Dave Jacobs, who created the original show, is writing a script for the new film. Regency Enterprises and Twentieth Century Fox are financing.

Anyone else think this is a bad idea? Well, it wouldn't be the first time a movie based on a TV show came to light - there have been some good and some bad - and if done right, who knows?
I know that Bruce Willis is going after the role of J.R. Ewing, and I think this is a mistake. I'd rather see Mel Gibson, although he's too old in my opinion.
Colin Farrell is said to be offered the role of younger brother Bobby Ewing, and that I can agree with.
Al Pacino as Jock, the patriach? No way - too short.
Who would you want in these and other roles? The film is expected to begin shooting in 2004.

"Dallas" is my all-time favorite show, so part of me would love a big-screen film based on this show. The other part of me is afraid it will be crap though. I don't like any of those names suggested to play the Ewings. Hollywood bad boy Colin Farrell as boy scout Bobby? I don't think so. Action hero Bruce Willis as the scheming J.R.? No thanks. Willis can barely act. I wonder if he would even attempt a Texas accent. The role of J.R. fit Larry Hagman like a glove. The producers of the film need to find someone who can do that role justice, even if it's an unknown actor. Al Pacino as Jock? What is this--a remake of "The Godfather"? The Ewings aren't Italian.
Do you know if the producers are going to make a serious movie with a good story, or are they going to make a tongue-in-cheek farce with big-name actors with questionable talent just to lure people to the box office? I mean that in a general sense; Pacino and Farrell are talented (so I don't mean them), but Willis and Gibson? Big stars, but neither has ever won an Academy award for his acting. Besides, Gibson is too much of a clown to be J.R.

The original rumor was that they wanted John Travolta as JR Ewing.
Personally, I think Gary Cole would make a GREAT JR Ewing.
I'd like to see someone like Anthony Hopkins (sans accent, of course) play Jock.
As for Bobby...ANYONE but Colin Ferrell! Let's at least get an actor in there...someone like Smallville's Tom Welling or Toby Maguire would be great.

As for J.R. Ewing - I thought a good choice would be Mel Gibson.

And Billy Bob Thorton for Ray Krebs!
And Sarah Michelle Gellar for Lucy Ewing!
And Kansas City Chiefs Coach Dick Vermeil for Cliff Barnes! (I always thought they looked alike!)

Betty Thomas takes on 'Dallas'
Travolta to still play J.R. Ewing in comedy
By MICHAEL FLEMING
Regency and 20th Century Fox are overhauling the bigscreen adaptation of TV series "Dallas," about the oil-rich Ewing clan, and this time they're drilling for laughs.
Betty Thomas, the director who mined two spoof movie hits from "The Brady Bunch," is in discussions to direct. Pam Brady, who most recently scripted "Hot Rod," is penning the script.
John Travolta remains attached to play slimy oil tycoon J.R. Ewing.
When the movie was derailed late last year, Gurinder Chadha ("Bend It Like Beckham") was directing. Luke Wilson was attached to play Bobby Ewing with Shirley MacLaine to play Miss Ellie, while producers were talking with Meg Ryan to play Sue Ellen after Jennifer Lopez dropped out.
The budget for the comic "Dallas" should be lower than the projected $65 million for the straight-faced version.
There is also hope that a comedy about the dysfunctional Ewings will appeal to a younger audience, which has become a Regency priority. Studio is eyeing a January start date.
