I sure hope so. Its long over due. The FOTR and TTT were much better movies than A Beautiful Mind and Chicago, IMO. It doesn't seem like there have been too many great movies this year but I have been hearing a lot of buzz on Mystic River. Didn't Jackson say that the ROTK was his favorite of the three?

I have a strong belief that it will win. I deal with voters all the time and for the past two years they have stated they didn't vote for Lord of the rings BECAUSE it was already going to be up for an oscar the follow year with the sequels and all. So finally, with the third and final, I think it will win.

I wouldn't count on it...and as some here know, I am one of the biggest fans you'll find. I still believe that there are too many voters who are dead-set against giving anything huge awards-wise to sci-fi or fantasy, because they don't think those films are serious enough. The fact that they're narrow-minded and have a distorted view of what these films are about is just something I have come to accept. Box-office is no longer an issue, nor is praise, so the hell with it.
But as you hear over and over, non-Oscar winners keep great company. And years after the Miramax 'art-porn' is forgotten, new generations will keep discovering LOTR and placing it high on their list of all-time favorites. That is the real reward.

exactly.
the oscar is a toss up. the film that has been hyped the most and has a lot of backing, or the sympathy vote that gives the award to the one who has been screwed out of time before.
If anything, they will vote on it for the simple fact that it's a 9 hour series that was shot in one big batch and turned out great.

No chance. Matchstick Man's gonna take that honor...
But seriously, I don't think the senior citizens would give LOTR the pleasure. It'll probably be some drama.

OK wait. None of you has even seen this movie yet right? Isnt this topic just a bit premature?
That being said, there is no way this movie will win best picture. Neither of the 1st 2 were even close. I love the movies, but they arent best picture type films. They are action movies

If Peter Jackson had incorporated a holocaust sub-plot, or made one of the characters retarded, then it would have a chance at a best picture oscar.
Otherwise its screwed simply because it falls in the SciFi/Fantasy category.

Yeesh, where is all this doom and gloom about ROTK's Oscar chances coming from? You certainly can't find it in the movie industry or the mainstream media. ROTK is widely aknowledged in Hollywood as the leading candidate for Best Picture (even by people who don't like the films.)
"Executives at rival studios are deeming [ROTK] the front-runner for the best picture Oscar, the standard by which all films will be judged." -- Variety, this week.
That doesn't mean ROTK will win, but it does mean the naysayers need to come up with more concrete reasons than "the Academy doesn't like fantasy movies." If this were really true, the Academy wouldn't have already given LOTR 19 nominations so far, including two screenplay noms, a Best Director nomination and two for Best Picture.
The BP nomination for TTT is the most telling, as it came even though TTT 1) is a sequel, 2) is the middle movie, 3) was not given a major push by its studio (they went with About Schmidt instead), and 4) did not have its director campaigning for it. If there's that much love out there for a picture that wasn't supposed to win, you can only imagine the level of support for the one that is!
PalmerJoss said that the Academy wants to see "drama, and something that's either really sad and depressing or something that's sappy and uplifting." You know, that's true ... and ROTK supplies all of this. That's why it's currently favored to win.
