Coupling 10/2/03

"Size Matters"

Actually, I think the second episode was much better than the stilted pilot episode from last week. But Jane is still horribly miscast, Lindsay Price just doesn't do the character of Jane proud at all.

Oh, BTW, the gay guy with Jane in this episode is the guy I would cast as the next Superman because he's got the looks and the build for the part. I wished I remembered his name, but I know he's been on daytime soap operas in the past. He reminds me of Christopher Reeve.

I definitely think the 2nd one was a marked improvement over the 1st. However, I disagree about Lindsay Price. I think she is the best actress of the 6.

Nah, I think Rena Sofer is growing into the role of Susan much better than Lindsay is with Jane. But as eye candy, Lindsay was looking smoking hot in that thing she was wearing last night. But I'll forever think that Lindsay was the silly-nilly who married Steve on 90210.

Rena would be #2 on my list and then there is a huge dropoff in acting quality.

Oh and Rena laying on that bed last night....

This ep was a lot better then the first. But immediataly afterward BBCA played the original version which was even better.

I get the feeling BBCA is saying FU to NBC.

yeah, it's hard to get into the nbc one when the originals are showing immediately after.

I can't believe I gave this a second episode when I swore I wouldn't. It was better, but still a pale shadow of the original. The only thing remotely entertaining about this show is remembering how funny the lines were when the original cast spoke them.

I love how BBC America plays the original episode immediately afterwards. I find it hilarious how much of Jeff's dialogue has been cut from the American version because the actor sucks so bad. His whole speech about The Blob and the puppy trapped in the car was gone, among other things.

This wasn't nearly as bad as the first ep, but still not good.

The actress who plays Sally is bad. Just terrible.

"Sally" reminds of of the actress who plays Brooke on "The Bold and The Beautiful".

I missed the premier but saw this one. Ugh. Maybe it's just the usual reaction to a remake, but throughout the whole thing, I felt like everything was just wrong. All of the performances seemd flat, especially Jeff and Jane. I suspect if I keep watching, I'm only going to be disappointed in the remade episodes, while the new episodes are either going to be lousy or will make me wish the British cast had filmed them.

Someone just informed me that Howard (Jane's gay date) was played by Paul Satterfield. Anyhow, he'd be my pick to play Supes.

I've never seen him before, but he's got the face, that's for sure...

And he's got the build, and pretty much the same type of acting pedigree that Christopher Reeve had when he got the part back in 1977-1978.

Yeah, he certainly looked a lot older in the episode than that picture shows.

That's pretty much how I feel too. Although it has inadvertently provided a source of entertainment for my wife and me. Sometimes we talk to each other like we're delivering lines rather than having a conversation, just like they do on US Coupling.

That sounds like it could be a lot of fun. I'll have to try that.

I don't know if I like the show. I know it is early and it could "develope". But it seems really forced to me. Really "set up". Like every line is a punch line.

I think the 22 minute format hurts this Americanized show because the BBC version has about 6-8 minutes more to develop the punchlines, while the NBC version just goes for the punchline with inadequate setup and character development.

Since I haven't viewed the original show, I don't know if Lindsay Price is miscast or not, but to me, she is definitely the best part of this one-note show. Rena Sofer coming in a close second. The rest of the cast just sucks.

Who cast this show? Were they taking an idiot pill? For a show NBC has put a lot into, it really doesn't seem like it. This show won't last another month.

If you had seen the original BBC version, you'd be scratching your head at the Lindsay Price casting as Jane.

Well I have and I am scratching my head at the whole thing, but the casting of Jane is certainly low on my list.

Two shows that haven't been very funny. I laughed at one line on the second show. I'm done.

Agreed, everything from the opening music credit sequence on seems RUSHED - like they're trying to squeeze 30 min into a 22min show with commercials. Really not working for me. The acting is just AWFUL.

Speaking of which... B.A.hist, here is a little background on this show. The cast was ORIGINALLY rounded out with Breckin Meyer as Jeff, Melissa George as Jane and Emily Rutherford as Sally. They only filmed the pilot before swapping out HALF the cast. So a lot of the timing/acting problems could simply be that these folks don't know how to work together yet. Sigh - I think Meyer would have been a great Jeff too.

As someone that has never seen an episode of the original, I find NBC's "Coupling" to be a pretty good show. I'll keep watching.
