what made "Duel" (Spielberg's first movie) so good?
I was one of the lucky ones who got it when amazon had a few listed. While some of it was indeed intense, most of the movie was average at best, and didn't really serve a purpose. I mean, I was at least expecting an explimation at the end of the movie as to who this driver was and why he wanted to kill.
bash me all you want, but I like most of Spielbergs other movies alot better then this one.
btw, I have it for trade if anyone wants it.

I love the fact that you never find out who the driver is and why he's after McCloud. To have revealed that would have brought the film way down, IMO. Why do American audiences need everything so wrapped up and over-explained to them?

Exactly. That mystery is one of the cool parts about the film.

you are out of your league rypro.
the mystery about it indeed stamped it and for it's time a film like this was exactly what made spielberg different and noticable.

I agree totally. The mystery is what I loved about the movie. I agree that it's annoying how American audiences always want everything spelled out for them. I'm glad this movie wasn't dumbed down.

I haven't seen it but it sounds like the truck just wants to randomly kill someone. That makes no sense unless some sort of motive is given. So apparently non-US fans like movies where someone does violent stuff with no explanation at all?

No.
I didn't feel the need for an explanation. I felt that the truck was something supernatural.

thought should have been your cue to stop your comments about this film.
The way it was presented left the mystery element there with enough hinting that hey, this thing means to kill this guy and it might not be of this world sort of feel. it was relentless and powerful.
