New Alicia Keys Album "The Diary of..."
This will be out on November 11, 2003, and you ca expect more piano planning from the great one. Although expectations are running so hihg with this records, that I have no idea what's going to happen. It comes out the same day as Josh Groban's album(one of my favorites), so I will be picking up both. I haven't bought a CD in, probably over a year, and this will be 2 on the same day.

it's sad when an artist starts to believe their HYPE.
i've like alicia since the first time I heard her back in 96-97[?]. she did "little drummer girl" on a Columbia Christmas sampler the label sent to the record store where I was working..
unfortunately, when "Songs..." came out, the media [and others] were treating her like she was the second coming and up until that point no one in the history of music had ever played a piano. I do have to give her props for just sitting at the piano during her live show considering the musical climate at the time [BSB/N'Stink highly choreographed dance routines].
nonetheless...I will be buying this album on the 11th. I just hope she can get over herself [unlike Lauryn Hill..

I like Lauryn Hill
I happen to like Lauryn Hill. Her album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" was incredible. I know she had that accoustic album that came out, which I personally liked, which had a little Tracy Chapman flavor to it, but I really want a new studio album.

I like Lauryn Hill too [though she had a lil too many P. Dummy "uh"s & "oh yeah"s during her songs], but she's another one believing her hype.
And that unplugged album was good, but bizarre.

Rogue, what evidence do you have of Lauryn Hill or Alicia Keys "believing their own hype"?
If you listened to Lauryn's unplugged album you could tell she's grown and changed as a person. She's no longer in the "rah rah" mentality where she's trying to fit an image to please the media/fans/etc. She's just being herself.
I don't know about Alicia Keys though, she needs to decide who she wants to be. Sometimes she's "ghetto", other times she's being "white".

well, i've seen/read interviews with Alicia..
and as far as Lauryn goes...read the RS article..it's all there. perhaps it's more "being taken advantage of...", but I don't think she's "being herself"..
not trying to fit an image is FINE with me, in fact, i'd PREFER if she didn't [unlike Jewel].

I've heard 2 tracks of the A. Keys album so far.
"Streets of New York" is a mixture of classic Alicia Keys singing/piano playing plus lots of rapping by Nas & Rakim.
"You Don't Know My Name" (the first single) is a Soul/Pop song, very 60s/70s Motown style.

wow, very very interesting....I'm suspicious about the accuracy of it though---and now just in these days of copy and paste imaginary journalisim---but it reeks of the same odor like the Eddie Vedder interview done during the No Code era where Vedder participated only in the photo shoot, but not the actual story and when it was released it was a lot of 'this wasn't said, that was said, truth was stretched' sort of rubbish. I'm not saying the article isn't true, I'm just a little cautious (though Toure is a respected music journalism)----either way it sounds as though she is searching, trying to be more herself and getting a lost along the way, such as we all do but without the public pressure.

So looks like this was pushed back a month. I really love "You dont know my name", I love that old school feel. Anyone happen to know the sample for that song?
"Streets of New York" basically a "remix" of Nas' "New York State of Mind". An unoriginal one at that.

Streets of New York is pretty good, even if it's only a rehash of a Nas classic (it's really good hearing Nas and Rakim on the same track). As for the L. Hill article...all I have to say is...wow. I can't stand when I hear allegations of making musicians sign off all credit of their work. I know that Dre (Dr., not 3000) has kind of had that following him around for years, but all of his co-producers get co-production credit and all beats that are labeled a Dr. Dre production have the same feel to them, while his co-producers' solo beats feel nothing like that, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. As for Lauryn Hill, I always thought Wylcef's first album was better than Miseducation... anyway.

Have you all heard the new Alicia Keyes album sampler? It only has 4 tracks (two of which have already received radio play), so I guess it's not really a sampler, but it sounds pretty good. As for The Source article on Dre, I stopped taking the Source or it's reporters seriously when half of the staff quit when Benzino (awful rapper/co-owner of the mag) went above the heads of his staff and gave his group, The Made Men, a rating of 4 1/2 out of 5. He has since started a very humiliating battle with Eminem (a couple of weeks before the new Benzino record was about to drop, mind you), Dre, 50 Cent and Aftermath Records. He and his magazine have a clear agenda against Aftermath/Shady Records and nothing that they print about them should be considered to have any journalistic integrity whatsoever. Ok, rant over. Check out the Alicia Keyes sampler if you can...
