Actually the greatest thing about this, in my view, is the new wheel they are coming out with it with 900 degrees of rotation, etc.

This thing drives like hell with a wheel - I'm sure it's partly cuz I suck though.. although, other games I'm quite good with a wheel. Those pics are like replay or intro pics... in-game looks pretty good, but not nearly as good as that - it looks about as good as GT3 (which pushed the hardware as well).

I just meant the in-game graphics for their next gen GT will look better than those cut scene graphics.

Just a question : Why are replay graphics always so much prettier than in game ones?

If that's not enough explanation, I'll try to describe this as simply as possible.
Your 3D card does a hell of a lot of work to generate a 3D image. It starts with data about like a million polygons that make up the local scene, with data about what the surfaces are like (shiny, bumpy, curved, transparent.) Then it calculates which ones are visible, assembles them into a scene, and paints them with textures. Then it has to compute lighting (given these light sources shining in these directions, how is the scene lit?), adjust for things like fog,... you get the picture. It does a lot. It gets worse - it has to do this in real-time - that is, at 25 frames a second or so - so the player sees a smooth image.
It manages this by making a lot of compromises on video quality. 3D models are simplified with fewer details; lower-resolution textures are used. The final image is not nearly as sharp, but you only see each image for 1/25th of a second.
A streamed movie is completely different. When game designers capture video, they render each frame with lots of detail. The trick is that they don't have to render the scenes in real-time, that is, 25 frames per second or so. It could take them half an hour to render every frame. All they have to do is render them, string them together into a movie, and store them on the media. Then your hardware pulls the image off and displays it, just as if it were displaying a movie... it doesn't have to worry about polygons and geometry; it just reads the frame from the CD/DVD/cartridge. Easy. (Of course, it's not interactive; it's just a movie.)

Last time I checked the GT3 replays were NOT movies, they simply remove alot of the background graphics to give nicer, higher poly model cars.
Edit: Also the PS2 has a very small amount of RAM (like most consoles) and could never store a 'movie' of a race fully rendered, especially on some that can be over 10 minutes long.

Is GameSpot the crappiest site there is? Screenshots never work for me, site is superslow to load, and forced ads make me believe the answer is yes!

eh, looks nice but I hate the gameplay. if I want real pyhsics in a racing game I'll go out to the track. when I play racing games I expect to flip over a couple times and still go full blast.

And in case you're wondering:
Mario Kart Double Dash will be for the Nitendo Gamecube
Halo 2 will be on the Xbox
and Super Mario Advance 4 will be on the Game Boy Advance

Those are in-game. The only movies in the game is the intro movie, and those are definitely not high quality enough to be a pre-rendered CGI movie. Believe it!

Do people really think these graphics look good? I think the high resolution of the cars against the low polygon count of the backgrounds gives the whole thing an unsettlingly fake game-y look. Besides which the colors seem faded and the lighting flat.
