This is probably one of the more far out rumors and pretty unlikely. But it sure is interesting none the less. It sure would be a big change of direction for the WB, going with Nolan in Batman and going with someone like Shyamalan. From the rest of the comments on the site, it sure sounds unlikely, but speculation is fun, no? :)

Hey, some of us LIKE M. Night! I enjoy his films because they are far better than the other dreck Hollywood is producing. Plus the citizens of Philadelphia would be happy...since M. Shyamalan's films are generally slow, meditative pieces, and I love them for it. I really can't see him doing Superman based on his existing work, but I'd much rather have him on the project than any other of these would-be, yes-men, uber-hack directors du jour (McG, Brett Ratner, etc.). I mean honestly: they were trotting out shitbags like Dominique Sena and David McNally as serious contenders!
I'm still holding out for Ridley Scott, but I might as well try to raise Kurosawa from the dead...

I like M Knight. I think it would be a great departure for him. At least he's capable of good storytelling and suspense. I can see him taking a completely different approach to this Movie than he's gone about his other movies, and knocking it out of the park. And shutting a lot of people up at the same time.
Better than McG. What the hell did he ever do that was good? I cringe at the thought of McG coming anywhere near the superman franchise.

I don't know much about the Superman mythos (at least from a comic book standpoint), but I think I would really enjoy M. Night taking this on. "Just a few words to confirm the accuracy of your reports that Jon Peters is leaving Superman. I have been on a spying trip at Warners, my friend works there. Anyhow, the name of the producer who is taking over from Peters, is Jerry Weintraub, an older, veteran producer i am told. Cant say the name rings any bells. Also the contracts between Warner Brothers, M Night Shyamalan and Brendan Fraser, are nearly signed and done deals. Thanks, Suzanne."

Weintraub? So will Superman get the Karate Kid or Vegas Vacation treatment. ;) Of course, Weintraub was holding on to the Plastic Man rights about 7 years ago. Was an intseresting script to read. And the storyboards back then looked cool, too.
Personally, I still like the Wachowski's directing. Neo flying in Reloaded should seal the deal.

Peters getting the boot, if true, is far more important news than any rumors about a particular director or cast. Peters has been the single biggest obstacle to a Superman flick for, oh, the last decade or so.
Based on what I've read elsewhere, if M. Night is involved, I'd guess it would be only as a writer, not as a director. He has too many other irons in the fire, for one thing. He's too expensive, for another.

I count myself as a fan of M. Night. I just don't see his style as a good match for Supes. He'd have to change his style to do it, so why bother. Pick another hero that matches your style more appropriately. Or better yet (as stated by someone earlier in this thread) let's see the second and third act of Unbreakable.
As for Ang Lee's Hulk, I definitely applaud his ambition. Because it is so different, it may end up holding up much better than it's contemporaries. I'll say this. If no one had ever heard of Hulk before this movie it would have been much better received. People's expectations of what a comic movie, and more specifically a Hulk movie, should be affected how they saw this (which is completely understandable). My biggest problem was with The Hulk himself. He looked too much like a pixar character imposed on the film. My willful suspension of disbelief just couldn't bridge the gap. Lastly on this, it should have been released in the Spring or Fall, not the Summer.
So who should direct Supes? My opinion is that is should be a big budget, ultimate thrill ride of a movie. Let the darker, brooding heroes be directed by the Nolan's of the world. Supes is about truth, justice and the American way. What's more American than the ultra deluxe summer blockbuster? Who is the master of that? Michael Bay.
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Look, up in the sky, it's a guy swinging from a tree, it's a guy running from a mummy ... nope, it's Brendan Fraser.
The guy who's played "George of the Jungle," starred in two "Mummy" movies and is about to co-star with Bugs Bunny in the upcoming "Looney Tunes: Back in Action"(opening nationwide Friday, Nov. 14), has confirmed to Zap2it.com that he's up for consideration to play the Man of Steel.
"Yeah, I've been approached, and I'm interested," says Fraser. "It's a possibility."
The actor is eager to play the caped Superman as well as mild-mannered Clark Kent, even though he's already brought to life the iconic "George of the Jungle" and "Dudley Do-Right."
"I mean, it's Superman, after all," Fraser says. "It comes down to a decision made from the studio level way on high, and it's something I have to consider carefully because the actor, whoever it is who plays that role, is historically forever known as that character. He's a superhero with no mask."
After a few false starts, Warner Bros. confirms having a script for the project by J.J. Abrams ("Alias"), which Fraser says he's read and claims, "It's a really good script."
"Charlie's Angels" director McG is attached to the project, now tentatively named "Kal-El: Genesis of Superman."
Fraser claims to know nothing more about the project, but insists, "I'm not trying to be funny, but stay tuned."

This film should be directed by Ridley Scott, scripted by John Milius, and feature Jason Isaacs as Luthor and Jude Law as Superman.
Knowing Warners, we'll end up with a film directed by the guy who did "Boat Trip" or "Kangaroo Jack", scripted by committee with a re-write by Akiva Goldsman to include lots of hysterical one-liners, and starring Tim Allen as Luthor and Jerry O'Connell as Superman.

Though I think Jude Law would make a great alien, I feel Brendan Fraser looks more the part of a Superman than Jude Law. Perhaps Law should portray either Jor-El, Zod or the Eradicator (assuming the latter two would even be in the film).
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Katie Holmes digs a man in a cowl.
The 24-year-old "Dawson's Creek" actress is on her way to playing Christian Bale's love interest, Rachel, in the new Warner Bros. "Batman" movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"Batman" will follow the early career of the Caped Crusader (Bale) and his dark past. In November, it was reported that Michael Caine would play Bruce Wayne's trusty butler, Alfred.
The latest of the Dark Knight's adventures is scripted by David Goyer, who also wrote big-screen adaptations for the "Blade" trilogy, and Christopher Nolan, who will also direct.
Holmes got her big break as Joey on the WB's "Dawson's Creek." She moved to films with Ang Lee's "The Ice Storm" (1997) and 2000's "Wonder Boys." She currently stars in the indie "Pieces of April" and will appear in the teen comedy "First Daughter" in 2004.

If you are casting a hero, then you need to cast an unknown. Christopher was unknown and due to this, you could actually see him as Superman, instead of that actor that was in those other films...Only problem with this is, the actor can end up being typcasted into the role - which is either a curse or blessing, depending on the quality of the movie and the actor's opinion on it. I don't think Reeves ever minded being "Superman" , but there are some actors who would hate that.
Too bad Katie Holmes is in Batman, while I'm happy she is, I think she would of made a better Lois Lane.
While we are on this subject, I for one, hate the Matrix trilogy, but I will give the Was brothers credit. They got the flying down pat and I think whoever directs this next Superman installment should take a note off of Matrix Revolution's flying scenes.

Not really a rumor, but I'd classify it as "thinking in the right direction":
From Superman Homepage (http://www.supermanhomepage.com/)
Tom Welling revealed on NBC's Last Call with Carson Daly on Tuesday night, that not only had he been approached about the lead role in the up-coming Superman movie, but that he'd met with then-Director Brett Ratner to talk about it.
"I actually went to Brett's house in Los Angeles and we sat down and talked about it a little bit, both knowing that scheduling would always be an issue," Welling said.
"Basically, if that movie were to happen, the show would pretty much have to go away, and I don't think that's what anybody wants."
"As least they've come to you," Daly said.
"They have, they have. Maybe just as comparison, but they have," Welling said.
Welling also revealed that he met Shaquille O'Neal (a major Superman fan) at the premiere of Welling's new movie "Cheaper By The Dozen".
"He introduced me to his kids as Superman, and that was pretty cool," Welling said.

I was watching my Smallville season 1 DVD tonight and was thinking about that. Welling would be great, he's great on the show, but he'd be the only person from the show in the movie, and it would just be too confusing for the audience. I'd rather them just leave Smallville alone in its own little universe. :)
Lately i've been thinking Kristin Davis from Sex and the City would make the perfect Lois Lane. I also think she'd fit nicely opposite Brendan Fraiser.
Now if only WB can get their head out of their ass, get a new director and realize that this is the dicrection the franchise should be going.

Back in December, Welling said that he had been approached about the lead role when director Brett Ratner was still on board the project.
