View Full Version : Region Free DVD Player?

I am looking for a region free DVD player that has PAL to NTSC capability that can be bought in a retail store (i.e. Best Buy, Circuit City). I'd rather not buy it online (no credit card!)

If I have to put in a code or whatever, that's fine, but just wish I can find one.

Check out the international forum here, there are a few threads discussing region free players.

I recently bought a Philips model at my local Meijer store (I think the model number was 726 or something like that).

Many of the Philips machines have an easy remote control hack that involves pressing about four or five buttons. After the hack, you can play any region and play PAL discs on your NTSC television (not sure if the reverse is true, but I assume you're in the USA).

With a sale coupon, I bought mine for around $70.

Oh, and it has no problem with anamorphic PAL on a 4:3 set. The only (potential) drawback is that there is no known Macrovision hack, but as I don't need that, it does what I need it to.

I know Best Buy used to sell the Cyberhome 500 players which disbled macrovision as well as did correct anamorphic PAL conversion, but I don't see it on their website anymore

They haven't sold the CH 500's in months. They are still available online at other etailers though. A good machine.

Check the international forum for the Toshiba 2900 thread.

If you live somewhere that has a Chinatown, wander on down and browse the DVD/VCD sellers - they usually have code-free players available.

Just a minor correction, the thread is for the Toshiba 3900.

Below is the first posting that started this thread.

Note that NOWHERE does it mention anything specifically regarding a 3900. Just because subsequent posters began mentioning the 3900 does NOT imply that this thread is "only about the Toshiba 3900.

My post was directly answering the original query.

Were you referring to the mention of the 2900 or the fact that the International forum thread was talking about the 3900?

shadowpuppet, he wasn't correcting you. His post had nothing to do with yours. He was correcting the fact that a previous poster said it was a Toshiba 2900 when it's a 3900. There is a Toshiba 2900 and it is not region free. It would be sad if someone bought it as a region free player by accident.
