A town where earthquakes are the least of your problems
A few days ago, I posted a message remarking on the reappearance of fictional characters in unrelated productions. Today I was reminded of something in the same vein – this time, regarding fictional locations. Santa Mira, California, could be considered the Castle Rock of the west coast. Here’s a short list; can anyone add to the disasters that have befallen this hapless burg?
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) – town is taken over by pod people
Halloween III (1982) – town is run by mad mask-maker who seeks blood sacrifice of the nation’s children on October 31st
“A Town for Hire” (Airwolf episode 59; aired 1987) – chopper forced to land in town run by weapons manufacturer
A Friend to Die For aka Death of a Cheerleader (1994) – cheerleader is murdered in … guess which town?
Phantoms (1998) – when the town of Snowfield is wiped out by a mysterious force, they call in the sheriff’s department from Santa Mira (where they are used to dealing with mysterious forces)

Very clever. I love treasure hunts.
Venomous - At a secret laboratory in the Mojave Desert, a renegade scientific unit of the U.S. military has been working on a top-secret project involving the breeding of rattlesnakes with a highly contagious and lethal virus.
However in a botched effort to steal the snakes, terrorists destroy the lab and the rattlesnakes escape into the wild, eventually making their way to the remote town of Santa Mira. After just one snake bite from an infected rattler, the virus begins killing the locals and fear spreads throughout the entire community. When the news reaches military officials, a plan is exacted to cover up the incriminating source of the virus. Under the pretence that it will prevent the virus reaching epidemic proportions, the military devises a calculated strategy: take control of the town, quarantine the area – then bomb it out of existence.

Ironically, since the last post made a Kevin Smith reference, the first thing I thought about was the fictional town where all the John Hughes movies of the 80s were set: Shermer, Illinois (which became a minor plot point in Smith's Dogma).
