I just got the AVIA disc for calibration, after too much guessing on settings in the past.

I was wondering about opinions about overscan.

I always thought that my TV had more overscan than it should (a 65" RPTV). I put up the overscan pattern and found that the overscan numbers are left - 6%, right - 7%, top - 5% and bottom - 4%.

My question is, is this horrible, or am I being too critical? The left-right and top-bottom numbers are off by 1% when compared to eachother, which would seem to indicate that the picture is slightly off center, but is 1% that big a deal?

Just looking for opinions. I heard somewhere that an overscan setting of 5% all around is a good goal, but I don't know.

Thanks.

I've heard that as well, and I think is a good rule of thumb.

5% is a good goal. I don't know that a percent or two off is going to be worth the hassle of trying to adjust for it. Have you been noticing any text being cut off the sides during movie opening credits?

Picture geometry is incredibly difficult to adjust without making things look a lot worse.

If you had your TV adjusted for 0% overscan, you would not like the results when you tried to watch broadcast or cable TV.
