Well, I was just starting to like the darn thing and now it gives constant disc errors and will not continue on with the game.

Called MS, 90 day warranty is up and they wanted 100 bucks to fix it. I was like no thanks. Anyone have a quick fix for this problem. Warranty is gone so cracking her open is no big deal. I tinker wth electronics alot so I am confortable with installing or uninstalling components - If someone could guide me.

Otherwise, What is the best deal going for another new one, or am I better off waiting till Christmas.

Thanks alot for your suggestions and help.

And I was going tonight to get ESPN 2K4

EB will take in broken xbox and ps2 systems, they'll give you $100 in credit if it is complete w/ cables and a controller. I would say thats your best route.

The first thing that I would try is buying a DVD cleaner. Walmart has a Panasonic DVD cleaner for about 12 bucks and will do a more thorough job than just blowing compressed air in it.

A friend of mine starting having problems just like you so I let him borrow my cleaner and it did the trick.

Which drive is in yours? RCA (Thomson), Toshiba or Samsung?

I had the RCA and all the cleaning in the world wouldn't help it, so I had to send it in for repair. I gave the CS guy a little hell over the $100 repair cost since they knew about the RCA drives crapping out. They agreed to repair it for $50 and gave me a new unit with the Toshiba drive in it. They also transfered all my music and game saves to the new unit.

That was back last Fall and I've had no trouble since.

May take the credit and wait for price drop. Any other advice. I really ticks me off since it is only 10 months old with very light usage.

Thanks

Mine is the RCA Drive. How much trouble would it be just to put a new drive in it yourself? Is it possible? If so where do I get it?

Actually found a place to get them, but they are 125 bucks (for the Samsung). I woould rather just get a new machine than pay that.

Lik Sang have a repair Kit for RCA drives $59 (http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?category=157&products_id=2669&)

Personally i'd trade it in and get another one.

And a 90 warranty is not specific to the Xbox but most consumer electronic's.

Just take it to EB and trade it in. You get $100 store credit which you can use toward a refurb or new xbox. $50 + tax for the refurb or $80 + tax for the new. Why mail it to micrsoft or try to fix it yourself when it is that cheap to get a new one?

This is wjat I did yesterday,...for the refurb. Then I also got a year in store warrenty. So it only cost me $50 + $15 (warrenty) = $60 for a replacement. The only bad part is I lost all of my saves.

Too bad... If they pay for them not working, can you crack it open and take the HD out before trading it in? Then just install the HD in the new one?

They still expect the xbox you give them to be complete on the inside. Plus, xbox hard drives are password protected, you cant swap them between systems. The hard drive that comes in one xbox only works w/ that particular motherboard. Only way around that is to hack the drive, but thats easier said than done. There are tutorials out there on how to do it, but you have to have pretty good knowledge of what youre doing and access to some electronics equipment.

EB Pays $100 for consoles as long as they are complete? Wow... I have a few free PS2's sitting around...maybe I can earn some easy cash....

I have to agree what the others have said about taking your X-box and trading it in for $100 credit at EB you can't do no worse than that too bad about the 90 day warranty expiring though.:(

Isn't it a little weird to trade in an Xbox ans then buy another one right there? Seems kinda fishy...

Can this be done with PS2s?
100 dollars credit?

It can be done with ps2 and xbox systems, $100 each as long as theyre complete.

Gizmo - when you trade it in, and tell them its broken, they actually offer you another of the same system you are trading in. When I traded in a broken ps2, they looked at me weird when I said I wanted a GC instead.

Trelach24 - If you look around, I think there is an old thread here wher i saw it, there is a set of pictures of the drives trays. You can tell by the difference in the way the tray looks.

OK - thanks all - My plan is to buy a memory card and get the important saves, not a lot - think I can get them all. Then trade it. Is there any reason to wait - price drop - or if the price drops will I lose out on a drop of the trade price?

Just called EB and they said no they will not take an XBox that is giving errors. How recently have you guys been trading broken ones in with them?

Oh called MS again and they claimed the Thompson drive problem was a rumor. And said once more that they would fix it for $100.

what read errors ;)

I doubt they were telling the employees it was bad. Of course maybe some employees do not care.

You sure you do not have a PS2 ;)

I told them the second I walked in there that the PS2 did not work, that it would not turn on at all. And they said that was not a problem.

Well, I gave up. Instead of buying a new XBox or letting my old one be fixed by MS, I just purchased a Samsung T616 flashed with 605 Bios. $90 shipped. The drive is supposed to read anything, so I may be better off with the upgrade anyways.

Thanks for all the help.

If my XBox had problems, I would pay $100 and have Microsoft fix it. Why you ask? Because there are some saves (such as DOA3 and DOAX) that are not transferable with a memory card. If you send in your XBox to MS, they will transfer the stuff off your HD to a new one.

That service is worth $100 to me. My time is too precious to lose my save games & have to do them over again.

Is microsoft backing away from their support of the system? I had huge problems with them when the xbox arrived, but latter got the impression they were doing better.

Right. Sorry to offend your lofty morals. Me I'd rather have a new X-box for free then have to pay $100 to get Microsoft to fix something they screwed up.

Merrial when you buy a product with a limited warranty it's your own issue when it fails.

As much I despise Wal-mart I must say that Wal-mart employees shouldn't have to bear the grunt of you lack of proper choice.

If you have a problem with an xbox potentially breaking do us all a favor and don't buy one.

Hey my X-box works fine... but if it does break I'll be damned if I'm gonna pay to get it fixed. When you buy something for 179.99 you would excpect it to work for more than 10 months.. but maybe thats just me. And I don't think Wal-Mart is gonna be hurting from a broken X-box they get reimbursed for.

ALL Walmart employees paychecks and bonuses are tied directly to stock performance, when they lose potential profits it effects everyone, including the old people that are working there just to afford their food.

Again I refer to my previous post. MS backs up their unit for 90 days. That's it. Anything outside that is YOUR problem, you shouldn't force the consequences on others, that's all we are saying.
