You'll probably find this thread helpful, from the International forum. I'd recommend checking it for info, in general too.

My top 5 or 6 HK and/or Japanese movies:

01) Battle Royale - a Balls-to-the-wall movie you will never, ever see release in the US for political and economical reasons.

02) Police Story - Jackie Chan at his best, featuring a chase through a shanty town. No, I mean THROUGH a shanty town.

03) The Legend of Fong Sai-Yuk - Jet Li defies gravity. Hellofaflick, with a pretty good follow up.

04) A Chinese Ghost Story - Any one of the three will do, cause they all rock. I favor the 3rd one myself.

05) The Armor of God - Jackie does Raiders of the Lost Ark! Kung Fu dominatrixes in high heels! Jackie almost kills himself! Classic stuff.

06) City Hunter - based loosely - VERY loosely - on the anime. The Street Fighter scene is the best in the movie.

If you're region free, you *MUST* look into getting the Hong Kong Legends discs. The loving restoration and care they lavish upon the movies is well worth the price to import them.

thanks for all the suggestions. with that in mind, what did you guys think of crouching tiger hidden dragon? Cause that movie combined "action" and "romance".

Duh, how could I forget The Killer and Hard Boiled. Two John Woo classics that really should be required viewing for anyone even remotly intrested in HK action films.

Anything directed by Wong Kar-Wai is excellent...but it's usually not exactly kung-fu.

Juzo Itami's comedies are hilarious.

I definitely second this, Wong Kar-Wai makes some very interesting, beautiful films. It ain't all about action in HK

For the best in HK Category III (R-rated) erotica (for adults of course), you cant beat the three classics Sex & Zen, A Chinese Torture Chamber Story and Eternal Evil of Asia. All of these are outrageous comedies chock full of the wackiness that got me into HK movies about 5 years ago. Reviews and many pics available at www.brns.com

I'm glad people are still finding my FAQ thread useful. You really should check out the International forum.

Also - if you like CTHD, I suggest Hero.
