Man... ever since I've seen the trailer Underworld has been on my must see list. Anyone else looking forward to it?

I wanted to...but when I finally saw the trailer before Pirates Of the Caribbean, I was underwhelmed.

I mean, Kate looks  in that black outfit...but I am just so. freaking. tired of the "slo-mo Matrix" camera shots. Now, I realize that this movie is hardly the only one that's contributed to ramming it into the ground -- but for some reason, it's the one that's incurring my wrath regarding it..

I do like that shot of her shooting a circle in the floor then falling through..

That trailer is absolutely atrocious.

Disgustingly bad music, CG werewolves (that, I suppose, are a bit better than the effects in American Werewolf In Paris), tired vampire cliches (hey! We all look great and dress in super-fashionable clothes! Yup, we blend in no problem!) and then that stupid term for the werewolves... 'lycans'.

Oh, I understand where the term comes from (go here (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=lycanthrope) if you don't), but it just sounds silly. She's being so serious in her little expository speech, and says it with such conviction. But it sounds like she's sworn to destroy a form of fungus that grows on rocks.

Did I mention the diabolical music? Did someone allow the music department for Daredevil to work again?

The film might be great, and I hope it is, but... man... what an impotent trailer...

I am. I'm a fan of Kate, and I actually enjoyed the trailer before sitting through the awful Freddy/Jason movie.

Gotta' disagree. The trailer got me pumped for this movie. Then again, I get pumped for any movie that features dark, stylized violence. Go figure.

This chick is like Blade's girlfriend! They should hook up in a crossover. Or maybe a Vs. movie. She might wanna kill Blade since he is kind of a vampire?

The constant slo-mo wire fu got really tiring in the trailer. I shudder to think what 2 hours will do for it.

I am so there. As a big gaming nerd, I have high hopes for this movie.

That was my initial reaction too, but if I can get in for a matinee I'd go just to see Kate. Slo-mo Kate? I can tolerate that for 2 hours.

As I've posted in the SEVERAL OTHER THREADS:D with this exact same topic, since it's announcement this is one of my most anticipated movie of the year. My only complaint is that it's PG-13.

But I LOOOOOOVE Kate Beckinsale & b/w this & Van Helsing she will become the biggest geek icon since Bruce Campell. Also she has a reputation of being one of the nicest, most approachable & real people in Hollywood.

I'm sort of looking forward to it. I'm not anticipating too much, though, cause I sort of think the movie will suck (no pun intended).

I've seen Blade and I've seen The Matrix, so no....I'm not looking forward to this movie, which is the combination of the previous movies mentioned.

I'm looking forward to it. Movies with a$$-kicking women are great and get my girl power attitude going unless/until they spiral down into cheesy lovestories a la The Matrix.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that Kate's character is also a vampire, so I'm thinking they are more likely to get it on than kill each other.

Usually I look forward to movies like this...but I am extremely sick and tired of every genre pic having the same dark, stylized cinematography... your run of the mill violence etc... the movie just looks tired...been there, seen that... I was extremely interested in the idea based on a synopsis, but the trailers have really put me off... it just looks extremely bland... I have a feeling it will underwhelm....i'll still check it out, but my hopes have been extremely dashed...

Don't forget The Crow and a bit of Dark City as well! ;) Putting all that aside though I am really looking forward to it. Hey if it sucks you still get Kate in tight leather for two hours. Not a totally fair trade but still...

Its just the whole Vampires hunting "Lycans" thing that sounds and looks cool.

Someone mention he/she is tired of dark, gothic type flicks... well please tell me how else to make a movie about Vampires and Werewolfs?

The trailer has me hooked. =)

Trailer looks great to me too.

Since my favorite movie of all time is "The Crow," I'm a big fan of dark streets, trenchcoats and rain. So I'm all over this one.

And I'm not tired of Matrix-like moves and fights if they are done well. And everything I saw in the trailer looked great.

the premise sounds good on paper, but after seeing the trailer and noticing that it looks like a love story got thrown in there, I'll probably pass.

Underworld is and always has been rated R. So rest easy. ;)

Oh and I am really looking forward to this and Van Helsing (though I prefered the concept art of the title character more than Hugh Jackman's final look in the film).

I’m sure I’ll see it, but I can’t say I’m anxiously awaiting its release. I don’t mind that the story, action sequences, and visuals look derivative; what concerns me most is the lack of energy---the trailer doesn’t give the impression that there’s any chemistry between the characters. Like mdc3000 said, the movie looks bland.

why would they end the preview on that slow mo jump shot? that just doesn't seem like a cool shot to end a trailer with. just seemed weird to me...

but i'll be seeing it.

Well, the reviews have begun. From Aintitcool.com.

<BLOCKQUOTE>Hi Harry, Just saw a private screening of Underworld.

Anyway, onto the movie. I was looking forward to it after viewing the cool trailer. Unfortunately, it's quite a dud. It's extremely heavy handed, the plot is confusing, and the characters unappealing.

The 'plot' revolves around a war between Vampires and Werewolves (or the Lycans), and the Vampires are winning. The Werewolves are trying different means to fight back, and the Vamps discover they're trying to get hold of medical intern Michael, played by the colourless Scott Speedman.

The war isn't fought with claw and fang, as one might expect, but guns, guns and more guns. However, the Vamps don't get to show their teeth much, just relying on firepower. Not even a scene where a human victim cops it. Selene (Kate Beckinsale), a 'death-dealer', is one of the foremost werewolf unters who chances upon the Werewolves plot, and races to reach Speedman before the Lycaens do with the help of her two handguns and later on, silver halide bullets to ****er the Werewolves 'UV gunk'. The rest of the movie is a bunch of unengaging action, more action than horror.

As reflects the Gothic origins, the movie is practically set in darkness. It's either night or underground. Some dashes of colour here and there, most noticeably on Bacardi ads.

And Kate Beckinsale? Unfortunately she lacks screen charisma. She dresses up in leather, wields twin hand guns, but can't compare to Carrie Ann Moss who did it with more style. Speedman is also empty and vacuous, The director paints them in without any personality, and you don't really give a poo-poo whether they die or get blown up. Frankly, the acting veers between two kinds of expression; constipated and extremely constipated.

There's no fun in the movie, not even a good Vampire joke. I left extremely disappointed. It's a film that's going to have one big weekend and fade off quickly because word of mouth about this movie is going to be pretty awful. Yet another victim of the 'great trailer, bad film' syndrome.

The transformation of the Lycans from humans to werewolves is pretty cool, but cool effects don't quite make a movie for me. It's a movie that was probably sold on it's concept, but alas, the execution leaves much to be desired. Worst of all, the ending tries to set up an 'Underworld 2', but may the undead rise before that happens.

Signing off,

Strahd

I would still like to see it though.

For some reason I've already taken the Lycan's side ;)

I know I'm still seeing this one even after all the negative views it has been getting lately.

If all these bad reviews are true, then I would certainly compare watching "Underworld" to eating a bucket of KFC...you know it's bad but you still go for it. Then regret comes after.

I've been waiting all year for this movie! For me, this year is all about the two Matrix movies, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, and Underworld. The preview looks awesome, and, of course, Kate is reason enough to see it!

I've read some good reviews, too...Dark Horizons website has three or four reviews: one very good, one poor, one mixed. But I don't believe in reviews too much. I am the best judge of what movies I will like. I can usually tell based on the trailer, the director, the stars, and the storyline. In this case, the trailer is awesome, the storyline is cool, and the star (Kate) is...well, Kate... :-)

I just hope the lawsuit doesn't push back the release date...Please, tell me it won't...

Nope. Not looking 4ward to it. Friend who saw a preview basically said the same thing the AICN reviewer did. It's a painful dud and the storyline just awful.

Isn't this more like a new chicken joint opening up that tries to sell itself as another KFC? Everybody tells you that their food sucks, but you go anyway and while you have to admit that it's not that great, you still secretly enjoy it because, hey, they're still serving up deep fried fatty meat and sometimes that's all you need.

-ipkevin, taking things too far... :lol

I caught a sneak preview of it in Birmingham that one of the local radio/television stations was hosting. I enjoyed it quite a bit, although I'd have to say that the vampires just seemed seriously underpowered compared to the lycans.

Viktor almost seemed to have a Southern accent. Kentucky Fried Vampire.

I even thought Scott Speedman did a good job... and he was just cool as hell in the end.

If this movie is successful, the end left it open for a sequel. I'd go.

Matrix Rip-off. And don't get started on the 'inspired by...' or 'homage' stuff. It crossed the line bewteen rip-off and homage.

That said, you'll see me there on Friday night.

I'm there, for sure.
Over here in England we've got Underworld and The Italian Job out on the same day so I'm going for a double bill. But AICN have been putting some negative reviews up, but I'll still watch it. By the way what is anyone's view on The italian Job, good or bad? (and please say your view on the film alone not in relation to the original). Thanks!
