Heartworn Highways country music documentary on DVD
Just wanted to recommend "Heartworn Highways" which is newly released on DVD. It's a mid-1970's documentary about so-called "outlaw" country music of the the time. It features great performances by Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, David Allen Coe, Charlie Daniels, Rodney Crowell, etc.
The video is surprisingly good for such an obscure film. The image is soft at times but the colors are fairly well preserved. There are quite a few print flaws but not enough to detract from viewing. Overall, this film has probably never looked better. I'm unsure of the original aspect ratio but it is almost full frame so the presentation is non-anamorphic. The audio is a 2.0 stereo track which is very clear and sounds great especially considering a lot of the performances are in locations other than stage and studio. The DVD is region free and contains and excellent stash of extra performances that never made it into the film and were previously unreleased.
The film itself ends up being more a showcase of talent with lots of anecdotal interludes than true by the book documentary. In the end, all I really wanted was the performances anyway. The DVD is available at CDuniverse and Bestprices for 13.99 & 13.44 respectively. If you enjoy music by any of the artists featured or mid-seventies country music in general this disc is essential.
