Today's CDs (8/11/03, or 11/08/03 for the Europeans out there)
Marah - Kids In Philly
Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker
Freedy Johnston - Right Between The Promises
Talking Heads - Remain In Light
Tom Waits - Rain Dogs
QOTD: Pick out one or two songs from your album list that move you, and 'splain why.
I already mentioned "The Great Curve" off Remain In Light in last week's threads, so I'll mention...
"Round Eye Blues" off Kids In Philly -- great rock song (about Vietnam War soldiers) that weaves in "Be My Baby" and a killer chorus. Moves me every time I listen to it. Centerpiece of a small masterpiece of an album.
"To Be Young (is to be sad, is to be high)" off Heartbreaker -- hardly surprising, since lots of people enjoy this song. Adams sounds so loose, and the lyrics sound perceptive beyond Adams' younger age. Love the high notes on "saaaad" and "hiiiiigh". Adams' best solo song is his first -- it's all gone downhill (slowly) from there.

I didn't listen to much today, coldplay's Parachutes to and from work, but speaking of Ryan Adam's lyrics, 'She wants to Play Hearts' from Demolition
"I'm a broken toy for a lonely girl, use once and destroy..." Oh the first time I heard that, I cursed myself and felt a tear or two well up...stupid girls.

Morning through mid-afternoon:
Unwound, Leaves Turn Inside You
Sonic Youth, Washing Machine
Yo La Tengo, I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One and Electro-Pura
and a couple Deerhoof tracks from Reveille and Apple O
Night:
REM, Murmur
!!!, Me and Giuliani Down by the Schoolyard
Junior Senior, D-D-Don't Don't Stop the Beat
"Perfect Circle" from REM's Murmur is such a great, great, great song. The forlornly sparkling piano and Stipe's vocals - just a little rust at the bottom - are ace! Each time I hear this, I swoon just a wee.
My girlfriend and I have had some problems lately, and she made that Yo La Tengo tape (with both of those albums on it) for me a week or so ago. "Shadow" has such a milky sweet melody and that vocal hook is so soft. The whole tape has been hard-decking me, though, that one just stands out in my mind.
Giles, why don't you ever do the QOTDs?

I just noticed that you generally run in and slap down what you've listened to for the day, but don't really bother with the extra stuff. I was just wondering why since I love reading everybody's comments and learning the personalities. That's all.

Wilco-Summerteeth
The Beatles-A Hard Day's Night
The New Pornographers-Electric Version
"Via Chicago" from Summerteeth moves me for some reason. Perfect melody and great lyrics.
"And I Love her" from A Hard Day's Night. Harrison's Guitar Solo. Nuff said.

I kind of just threw on the Blur album since it was the first CD this morning that I felt like listening to while showering. I really can't say I like the 'new' Blur, really liked their Brit-pop phase songs.
Manics - wanted to hear the album since this last past weekend was trying to find a copy of the new "B-sides" album but was not having any luck (succumbed to buying the import from CD-WOW at a pretty reasonable price along side another copy of the Black Box Recorder album which I lost - grrr). I absolutely love "Tristesse Durera (Scream to a Sigh)" and "Suicide Is Painless {Theme from Mash}"
Listened to REM's song "I Get High" from off their "Reveal" album as well, while doing laundry this afternoon. Great, beautiful song

Junior Senior - D-d-don't Don't Stop the Beat
Grandaddy - Sumday
Crooked Fingers - Red Devil Dawn
Phish - Live Phish 01 12/14/95
Guster - Keep It Together
AOTD:
Crooked Fingers "You Can Never Leave" - The lyrics are absolutely brilliant (example - "Blue eyes of fire/Sweet desire is bitter torture/You are no father's daughter/No man has this much to offer"). The music is moving, increasingly building from verse to chorus, then dropping back down again at the next verse. Amazing, moving song. Probably the best song I've heard this year.
Phish "Halley's Comet" - This song always puts a smile on my face and makes me want to dance like an unfunky white boy. Sometimes it's the simplest pleasures that hit the hardest...
Guster "Come Downstairs and Say Hello" - Still a bit iffy on the new album as a whole, but this song is excellent. The most complex song they've ever written musically and lyrically.
