Kevin Costner: "Waterworld was a Great Movie."

Costner actually said he thought Waterworld was a "great movie" on Primetime with Diane Sawyer. Whoa...just admit that the movie didn't work, don't delude yourself into thinking it was "great." The Godfather, Citizen Kane, Casablanca; those are great movies. Although I normally don't like Westerns, I thought that the Open Range commercials were pretty good. Now I may sit this one out.

There are GREAT movies and there are "great" movies. Knowhumsayn? I'd never, EVER put Waterworld among the GREATS, but I personally love the movie - in other words, I too think it's a great movie. Is that confusing?

I agree with shill. I really enjoyed Waterworld, but I do not consider it a GREAT movie. However, compared to most of Costners other pics it is a great movie.

I HATED this movie. It wasn’t exciting enough to thrill me, interesting enough to provoke thought, or sufficiently stupid to be unintentionally funny.

I think Costner ruined waterworld because he directed it. He couldn't bear to cut any of his scenes, and that ruined it.

I haven't seen Waterworld, but kudos to Costner. Most folks in Hollywood quickly disown any film that does poorly. He thought it was a great film, and he's not afraid to say so.

I like watching it on HBO. That's it. But come to think of it, I even like watching The Postman on HBO. Kevin Costner = Mad Max Wanabee. HAHA!

I liked it too. Dennis Hopper was pretty damn funny.

I found it very entertaining, but then, I also enjoyed The Postman. Popcorn movies, both.

Costner did not direct. Kevin Reynolds (Robin Hood Prince of Thieves) directed the film, though the behind-the-scenes battles ruined their friendship, apparently.

Didn't Costner fire Reynolds and finish the movie himself (albeit uncredited)?

Supposedly Costner did fire Reynolds, but I don't think it's ever been made official. I do remember Reynolds saying after Waterworld that him and Costner would NEVER work again, though.

I admit, I'm one of the few people who enjoy watching Waterworld. I still don't understand why the movie is so bad in many people's eyes.

I liked the movie too. Not too much, but it had its moments. And I liked The Postman too.

I'm guessing this thread isn't exactly going the way Variable697 expected.

Watching him on Inside the Actor's Studio, I had to turn it off when he was talking about his post-Dances with Wolves films. The audience seemed to not be in on his ramblings. None of the audience clapped after the mentions of these films and it looked like he felt uneasy because you could definitely tell the audience was not into him.

If there wasn't constant media attention on the movie while it was being made, with all the curiously joyful reporting on how the film was going over budget and how Costner and the director were not getting along, no one would be caring whether Costner thinks its a great movie or not.

Great movie? No. Great movie when compared to the myth of how it was as awful as Battlefield Earth? Yes.

Not an awful movie, but very dull, IMO. My complaint after seeing it was that I couldn't care less about a single character. Kill 'em, let 'em live, succeed, fail, I didn't care.

I hated Waterworld. But that being said, I liked The Postman and Wyatt Earp...and I LOVED Thirteen Days.

There was one thing I really liked in Waterworld, when the movie begins the Universal globe floods over before the opening credits. It was all down hill after that.

I really liked Waterworld too.
Infact, I'd like to get it on DVD. Is the DTS version more worthwhile?

I'll jump on the wagon too. I liked Waterworld (definately not a "great movie", but I enjoyed it and would watch it again) as well as The Postman.

Not a Great movie, but interesting story and well worth the 2 1/2 hours to watch it.
