i dont get scared of horror movies most of the horror i see is always funnier then scary. i need help finding a scary movie. please dont say the exorcist that movie isnt scary at all what an over rated piece of ****. maybe it was scary for its time. i was looking at blockbuster there was a movie called the dentist it sounds like it has the potential to be scary from reading the back. are there any scary horror movies? i realy hope so.

I've said it before, but Session 9 is a very well made, effectively atmospheric film that I recommend highly. Watch it alone in the dark.

If you didn't think The Shining was scary, you may not think Session 9 is scary. But still, you should check it out and judge for yourself. Like The Shining, Session 9 works on a more psychological level. It doesn't use gore and scary images to create fear, but instead mood and atmosphere (that's not to say the two movies don't have gore/scary images; it's just that they take a back seat to atmosphere). It's the kind of movie that gives you a constant sense of fearful anticipation. It worked for me.

Plot summary:

There's always at least one person who can't resist the "scary" jokes. Well, this time, the request was for a scary HORROR movie, not just a scary movie, so the response doesn't fit (like it usually does). Nyah nyah.

Can't think of a movie that has ever really scared me since childhood. Lots of movies give me the occasional noticeable chill, like The Fly (the original, at the end of course), Isle of the Dead with Boris Karloff, and so on. Targets (imminent on DVD) scared me a lot, but it's not a horror movie. Signs made me significantly edgy and nervous, which is more of a response than most movies give me these days. An American Werewolf in London did it nicely, but that was when I was 15.

Cornholio, it sounds like you're going to have a hard time finding a movie that scares you if you didn't think The Shining, The Ring or the Exorcist were scary.

I get creeped out pretty easily by horror movies, even a lot of the cheesy ones. It's probably because I usually watch them alone in my basement. Plus I have a pretty good surround sound system and a digital projector. Watching a horror movie on a TV doesn't really do anything for me because it doesn't draw me in as much as a big screen does.

Anyway, here's a few suggestions.

Many people simply don’t find horror movies “scary”—you might be one of them. I think horror is like porn; it’s personal---what I see as titillating, you might find boring. Like porn, horror is composed of many sub-genres and styles that appeal to different tastes: haunted house, ghost/supernatural, slasher, zombie, vampire, monster, etc. Within these genres, there are stylistic differences in terms of approach: some attempt to create fear graphically though ostensibly horrific images, while others rely more on one’s imagination.

Perhaps I’m mistaken, but it sounds like you approach horror with the expectation of being frightened and use this as the benchmark for judging these movies. Frankly, I think that’s the wrong mind set; if you dare a movie to scare you, chances are it won’t. I don’t use sphincter factor to gauge horror---if the story and story-telling are compelling, that’s good enough for me. Lot’s of excellent horror flicks are more about the mood and atmosphere than the jumps.

With the above in mind, here’s a short list of my picks—excluding the one’s you’ve already nixed. But I seriously doubt you’ll find any of these scary.

Wow, these are some of my favorite movies! (Well, except for Final Destination.) You want to join the Good Taste Coalition?

Anyway, back to the task at hand: while many may not find it scary, I think Zulawski's "Possession" is pretty unnerving.

If you're looking for old school Carpenter jump-flicks, "The Fog" is great up until the end. I have the same complaint with "Rosemary's Baby". TREMENDOUS tension building up to an unsatisfactory conclusion. Still, the first 3/4 are GREAT.

"The Reflecting Skin" isn't scary really, but it's kind of unnerving. May be too slow for your taste.

If you like the Eye-talian gore, "The Beyond" is pretty great in the "this is completely unrealistic but a lot of fun" gore style.

"Dawn of the Dead" is one of the great films of the 70's (which is saying a lot) but while it is gory, funny, and great escapist fantasy, I wouldn't really call it scary. Still it's a great movie.

I've always thought the original Halloween was pretty creepy.

For serious gore and a great plot, check out Day of the Dead, the first sequel to Night of the Living Dead. It's only out on Video right now, but it's my all-time favorite horror movie. It's got a very realistic feel to it, with nothing mainstream about it. Definitly a must see with a great atmosphere and memorable characters. The last installment of the trilogy, Dawn of the Dead is equally as entertaining. George Romero is the king of horror!

For something seriously scary, Cannibal Holocaust is a good one. It's got some debates surrounding it as to whether the human blood is real or not, although the popular answer is no. It's pretty much agreed that the animal kills are real, and even those that can tame even the worst horror movie, have a hard time stomaching this one. The gore is top notch and very realistic.

Another great one in my book is Cube. It's got a good atmosphere and good death scnenes. Ending is predictable, and rewatchability is average for most viewers although I've found it to be great every single time.

The original Hellraiser and the first sequel are very good. Kind of mystical and unrealisitic as far as the plot, but the gore is good, and the storyline is very orginal.

Although I haven't seen it, I've heard that the original [Zombie by Lucio Fulci which is another king of horror. The gore is very well done, and some scenes are supposedly very difficult to watch.

Very good point. Something tells me cornholio typically watches his horror movies with a big group of drunk friends who laugh at everything they see (i.e. the head spinning in The Exorcist could be either disturbing or hilarious, depending on the mindset of the viewer). In order to get the full effect of a good horror movie, it's essential that you watch it alone and in the dark. And like funkyryno mentioned, a good sound system doesn't hurt either.
